Trojan Baseball struggles in doubleheader loss to William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – The Dakota State University baseball team returned back to action on Friday afternoon. The Trojans visited William Jewell (Mo.) in a non-conference doubleheader at Polly Grant Field. The Cardinals swept DSU 11-1 in five innings and 18-1.
Dakota State remained winless in eight games. William Jewell raised their overall record to 10-5.
The Cardinals opened the game with a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second inning, the Trojans scored once to cut the deficit to 3-1. Beau Behrend hit an RBI to score Chaz Palmer.
William Jewell recorded four runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead to 7-1.
The Cardinals added two runs in the bottom fourth and fifth frames. WJC ended the game in the fifth inning due to mercy-run rule.
Chance Hargrove had two hits for the Trojans. Behrend had a double and an RBI. Palmer, Max Garza and Jake Weier each added a single. Palmer recorded a stolen base.
For William Jewell, Freddie Adamason went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Jason DeMore added a home run and recorded three RBIs. Randy Cruz had two doubles. David Smith recorded a triple.
Ted Wonnenberg (0-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He tossed three innings and allowed seven runs (three unearned) on six hits. Derek Bohlander pitched 1/3 innings in relief. Andy Lee closed the game in 1 1/3 innings.
Joe Malin (1-1) tossed a complete game for the Cardinals. He allowed one run on seven hits.
Both teams left six runners on base.
William Jewell scored a combined nine runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to grab a 9-0 lead.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the top of the fourth inning. Chance Hargrove recorded an RBI to score Ryan Steffensen to trim Cardinals' lead to 9-1.
WJC exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to expand their lead to 17-1. The Cardinals added one run in the sixth inning to read the final score (18-1).
Steffensen had a triple for DSU. Palmer, Jamie Barbour and Connor Hargrove each had a double. Barbour, Marshall Doeden and Kelly Murray each had a single.
JP Bartmess recorded two doubles and four RBIs for William Jewell. Smith added four RBIs and three singles. Cruz was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Tom Bailey (0-2) recorded the loss for the Trojans. He pitched two innings and allowed five runs (three unearned) on five hits. DSU used five pitchers (Brandon Womack, Weier, Behrend, Connor Hargrove and Dylan Jones) in relief.
Colin Warren recorded his first win of the season for William Jewell. He pitched a complete game and allowed one run on seven hits.
Dakota State concludes their week-long road trip on Saturday in Lamoni, Iowa. The Trojans will face Graceland (Iowa) at 11:30 a.m. DSU will face Mount Mercy (Iowa) after the completion of DSU-Graceland game.
