DSU Baseball falls short to Graceland and Mount Mercy

LAMONI, Iowa - The Dakota State University Trojan baseball team played their final two games in their week-long trip on Saturday. The Trojans faced Graceland (Iowa) and Mount Mercy (Iowa) at the Chase Stadium. DSU fell short to the Yellow Jackets 9-5 and 3-2 to the Mustangs.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-10.
Graceland (IA) 9, Dakota State 5
The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Graceland added three runs in the bottom fourth frame and four runs in the sixth frame to extend their lead to 9-0.
DSU mounted a late rally in the top of the seventh inning. The Trojans scored five runs but fell short.
Ryan Steffensen went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Dakota State. Chance Hargrove recorded a single and two RBIs. Jamie Barbour, Chaz Palmer, Max Garza and Beau Behrend each had a single.
For Graceland, Jensen Sato went 3-for-4 with two double and two RBIs. Joesef Gonzalez and Meredith each had two hits.
Seth Doxey suffered the loss for DSU. He tossed a complete game. He allowed nine runs (five unearned) on nine hits. Doxey recorded two strikeouts.
Garrett Grundman remained undefeated in four pitching appearances for Graceland. He pitched five shutout innings and limited the Trojans to two hits. Grundman struck out four batters. Martin Martinez tossed 1 1/3 innings in relief. He allowed five runs on four hits. Brian Lira closed the game in 1/3 inning.
The Trojans committed five errors compared to the Yellow Jackets two.
Both teams left eight runners on base.
Mount Mercy (IA) 3, Dakota State 2
After two scoreless innings, the Mustangs scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
Dakota State answered back in the top of the fourth frame to tie the game at 1-1.
Mount Mercy scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Trojans recorded one run and fell short.
Barbour went perfect behind the plate for DSU. He recorded a home run, a single and two RBIs. Steffensen and Doxey each had a double. Hargrove and Garza each added a single.
For Mount Mercy, David Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with two singles. Alex Heumann and Eric Bearbower each had a single and an RBI.
Barbour started the game for Dakota State. He tossed two shutout innings and allowed four hits. Connor Hargrove pitched the third inning and gave up one run. Tom Bailey (0-3) took the loss for the Trojans as he pitched an inning. He allowed two unearned runs on one hit. Brandon Womack pitched two shutout innings in relief.
Ben Keeney recorded his first pitching win for the Mustangs. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Matthew Salas notched his first save as he closed the game.
Dakota State returns home on Thursday. The Trojans host Dakota Wesleyan in a doubleheader at the Flynn Field. First game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
