DSU splits with Mayville State, records first DAC baseball conference win

MADISON, S.D. – At the windy Flynn Field on Sunday, the Dakota State University baseball team concluded their six-game home stand against Mayville State. The Comets shut down the Trojans in the first game 6-0. Dakota State recorded their first conference win of the season in the second game and defeated Mayville State 7-5.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 3-23 and 1-7 in the conference. Mayville State dropped to 14-8 record and 5-3 in the conference after the loss. The Comets won the four-game series, taking the first three games from DSU.
Game 1 – Mayville State 6, Dakota State 0
After two scoreless innings, Mayville State scored their first run of the game in the top of the third inning. Brad Ferraro hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Jake McLain to give the Comets a 1-0 lead.
Tanner Carpenter added an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Dusty Brend (pinch runner for James Olderbak) in the top of the fourth inning. Alex Berry hit an RBI double to score Louie Brezina (courtesy runner for Billy Tomblin) to extend the Comets' lead to 3-0.
MaSU produced a combined three runs in the final two innings of the game to secure the victory.
Chaz Palmer and Chance Hargrove each had a single for the Trojans.
For Mayville State, McLain, Ricky Alvernaz and Tomblin each had three hits. Carpenter, Berry, McLain, Alvernaz, Ferraro and Brock Gnadt each recorded an RBI.
The Comets outhit DSU 14-2. Mayville State left 13 runners on base compared to the Trojans' four.
Jake Weier suffered the loss for DSU. He pitched six innings and allowed four runs on 11 hits. Ted Wonnenberg worked the seventh inning. He gave up two runs on three hits.
Sam Hirchert recorded his first pitching victory for the Comets. He limited DSU to two hits. Hirchet struck out five batters.
Game 2 – Dakota State 7, Mayville State 5
Alvernaz hit an RBI single to score Berry to give MaSU a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.
Gnadt opened with a double in the top of the 2nd inning. The Comets hit two straight sacrifice bunts from Ferraro and Dusty Brend to score Gnadt to extend their lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ryan Steffensen hit a single. Chance Hargrove was hit-by-pitch and advanced Steffensen to second. Palmer recorded a bunt single to set up a bases loaded situation. Derek Bohlander recorded an RBI walk to score Steffensen as DSU cut Comets' lead to 2-1. Kyle Braun added an RBI single to score Chance Hargrove to tie the game at 2-2.
Max Garza hit a single to open the bottom fifth frame. Connor Hargrove hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Andy Lee (courtesy runner for Garza) to second base. Steffensen hit an RBI single to score Lee to give DSU a 3-2 lead. Palmer reached on base by intentional walk and Seth Doxey added a walk to set up a bases loaded and two out situation. Braun hit a 3-RBI double to extend the Trojans' lead to 6-2.
Dan Bauer recorded an RBI double to score McLain to trim DSU's lead to 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning. The Comets added a run caused by the Trojans' defensive error to make it 6-4 in favor of Dakota State.
Jamie Barbour added an RBI single to score Doxey to give the Trojans a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.
MaSU's McLain hit a sacrifice fly to score Brezina in the top of the ninth inning, but DSU secured their victory with two runners left on base.
Braun went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and recorded four RBIs for Dakota State. Steffensen and Palmer each added two singles. Garza, Connor Hargrove, Cody Foreman and Barbour each added a single.
Gnadt and Bauer each had a double for the Comets. Carpenter added two singles. Berry, Alvernaz, Ferraro and Tomblin each had a single.
Both teams had eight runners left on base.
Barbour notched his first pitching victory for the Trojans. He pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on five hits. Connor Hargrove recorded his first save this season as he worked the final 3 1/3 innings. He gave up an unearned run on four hits.
Andy Stone started the game for Mayville State. He pitched three innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Andrew Walters (2-2) suffered the loss. He tossed 1 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Greg Weinhagen worked for 1/3 innings and gave up one run on one hit. Trevor Lishanko pitched the final three innings. He allowed an unearned run on three hits. Lishanko recorded four strikeouts.
Dakota State will head on the road next weekend for a DAC four-game series in North Dakota. The Trojans will face Minot State in Minot, N.D. on Saturday (April 16) and next Sunday (April 17).
