Coyotes shut down Trojans in non-conference softball action

VERMILLION, S.D. – On a beautiful day, the Dakota State University softball team faced University of South Dakota in a non-conference twinbill at the Nygaard Field on Tuesday. The Coyotes snapped their six-game losing streak by shutting down the Trojans by the scores of 13-0 and 9-0.
Dakota State lost their sixth straight game and dropped their overall record to 11-14. USD improved their record to 14-25.
Game 1 – University of South Dakota 13, Dakota State 0 (5 innings)
The Coyotes scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Stephanie Hall hit an RBI double and Mel Johnson added an RBI single.
USD extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom second frame highlighted by Bre Zmolek's solo home run and Johnson's 3-run home run.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Coyotes added three runs to make it 10-0.
Lindsey Boyd hit a 3-run home run in the bottom fourth inning to give USD a 13-0 lead.
Dakota State got their first hits of the game in the top fifth inning. Jessica McLane and Jessica Shaw hit back-to-back singles. The Trojans were unable to score with runners left on third and second bases, as USD ended the game by mercy rule.
Amanda Stevenson reached on base by a walk and recorded a stolen base for DSU. Ashley Stevenson was hit-by-pitch.
Johnson went 2-for-3 with a home run and recorded five RBIs for the Coyotes. Boyd added a home run, recorded four RBIs and two stolen bases.
USD outhit the Trojans 14-2. DSU committed four errors in the game.
Alisa Balesteri (4-6) took the loss for Dakota State. She pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs (two unearned) on six hits. Brittany Tebbe worked 2 2/3 innings in relief. She allowed six runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Tebbe recorded two strikeouts.
Johnson (5-8) tossed a complete game win for USD. She struck out eight DSU batters and allowed two this.
Game 2 – University of South Dakota 9, Dakota State 0 (5 innings)
With bases loaded and one out situation for USD in the bottom of the first inning, the Coyotes scored its first run of the game from Hall by DSU's wild pitch. USD added two runs from Kassie Loe's RBI walk and Christine Broders's RBI sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Boyd hit an RBI double to score Kate Snow to give the Coyotes a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
The Coyotes recorded a run in the bottom of the third frame by DSU's wild pitch to make it 5-0.
USD put together a four-run in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the victory. Hall hit a 2-RBI triple. Alexa Rudeen ended the game with a 2-run home run.
Jayna Ackerman had a double for DSU. Ashley Stevenson and McLane each added a single. Jesica Alcala recorded a stolen base.
Hall went 2-for-3 behind the plate with a home run, a single, two runs scored and two RBIs for the Coyotes. Snow added two singles and two runs scored.
USD recorded eight walks in the game. The Coyotes had eight hits compared to DSU's three.
South Dakota left eight runners on base. DSU had four runners left on base.
Shaw (5-8) recorded the loss for Dakota State. She pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed nine runs on eight hits.
Paige Policky (5-3) tossed a complete game win for USD. She allowed three hits and recorded ten strikeouts.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they return home on Thursday. The Trojans will host Mount Marty in a non-conference twinbill at the Thue Softball Complex. First game is slated for 4 p.m.
