Minot State sweeps Trojans in DAC baseball action

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Dakota State University baseball team traveled to the Post 22 Field last Saturday and Sunday to take on Minot State. The Beavers swept the Trojans by the scores of 6-1, 5-0, 10-1 and 12-2.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 3-27 and 1-11 in the DAC. Minot State improved their record to 12-16 and 4-6 in the conference.
Game 1 – Minot State 6, Dakota State 1 - Box Score
Minot State scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Jaret Chatwood hit an RBI single to score Michael Mesh to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
The Beavers had three straight hits to open the bottom second frame. Jordan Gilmour hit an RBI single to score Mitch Olson to extend Minot State's lead to 2-0.
With bases loaded and one out situation in the top of the third inning for DSU, Chance Hargrove recorded an RBI single to score Beau Behrend to cut their deficit to 2-1.
Minot State scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to make it 4-1. The Beavers added a run in the fifth and sixth innings to secure their first conference win of the season.
Behrend had a single, a run scored and two walks for Dakota State. Jamie Barbour, Hargrove, Chaz Palmer and Andy Lee each added a single.
Scott Peters, Mesh and Olson each had a double for the Beavers. Chatwood ha d a home run, a single and recorded two RBIs. Kory Houston and Jordan Gilmour each added two singles.
Minot State outhit the Trojans 14-5. The Trojans left 10 runners on bases compared to the Beavers' seven.
Seth Doxey (1-5) recorded the loss for DSU. He tossed four innings and gave up four runs on 10 hits. Brandon Womack worked the final two innings in relief. He allowed two runs (one unearned) on four hits.
Tanner Lorenz notched his first victory of the season for Minot State. He pitched a complete game and gave up one run on five hits. Lorenz recorded 14 strikeouts.
Game 2 – Minot State 5, Dakota State 0 - Box Score
After two scoreless innings, the Beavers produced four runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 4-0 lead.
Minot State extended their lead to 5-0 by Houston's RBI triple to score Peters in the bottom of the fourth inning.
DSU recorded four singles in the game from Max Garza, Hargrove, Palmer and Lee.
Houston had a triple and two RBIs for the Beavers. Gilmour, Connor Moughtin, Chatwood, Ryne Hornecker and Peters each had a single.
Tom Bailey (1-7) took the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on three hits. Jake Weier tossed 5 2/3 innings in relief. He gave up one run on three hits.
Anthony Friesen (2-2) pitched a complete game for Minot State. He tossed nine innings and gave up four hits. He recorded 15 strikeouts.
Game 1 – Minot State 10, Dakota State 1 - Box Score
Minot State produced seven runs and eight hits in the opening inning for a 7-0 lead.
The Beavers added three runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead to 10-0.
Chance Hargrove hit a solo home run in the top fourth frame to trim Beavers' lead to 10-1.
Garza added a double for DSU. Lee and Doxey recorded two singles. Barbour, Palmer and Kyle Braun each added a single.
Brian Vine went 3-for-4 behind the plate for Minot State. He recorded a triple, two singles and two RBIs. Mouhgtin added a triple and a single. Peterson and Olson each had a double.
Minot State outhit the Trojans 18-9 in the game.
Barbour (1-3) recorded the loss for DSU. He started the game in the first inning and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Womack tossed five innings in relief. He gave up three runs on 10 hits.
Cole Stober (2-3) took the win for the Beavers. He pitched five innings and limited the Trojans to one run on nine hits. Cody Nevins pitched the final inning and struck out three batters.
Game 2 – Minot State 12, Dakota State 2 (8 innings) - Box Score
The Beavers grabbed a 4-0 lead after four innings.
Dakota State scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to cut their deficit to 4-2. Hargrove reached on base by Beavers' defensive error and scored Cody Foreman (courtesy runner for Garza). Palmer added an RBI single to score Connor Hargrove for DSU's second run of the game.
Minot State added a run in the bottom of the fifth frame to extend their lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Beavers exploded for six runs to make it 11-2.
Chatwood hit an RBI single to score Moughtin in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Beavers ended the game by mercy rule.
Chance Hargrove went 2-for-4 with a double, a single and an RBI for DSU. Barbour, Palmer, Doxey and Weier each added a single.
Five Minot State players recorded a double in the game. Peters had two doubles, a single and recorded two RBIs. Hornecker was 2-for-3 with a double and a single. He had four RBIs.
The Beavers had 17 hits compared to the Trojans' six.
Lee suffered his first loss of the season for the Trojans. He tossed four innings and allowed four runs on six hits. Palmer pitched three innings in relief. He gave up eight runs (one unearned) on 11 hits.
Brody Pinkerton (2-0) recorded the victory for Minot State. He started the first 4 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Bryan Krahler pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings. Paul Thompson worked for one inning and allowed two hits.
Dakota State will continue their Dakota Athletic Conference action on Friday and Satudray. The Trojans will visit Dickinson State in a four-game series in Dickinson, N.D.
