DSU drops pair of DAC Baseball game to Dickinson State

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Dakota State University baseball team continued their action in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) on Saturday. The Trojans played DAC's leader Dickinson State in a doubleheader at Post 22 Stadium. The Blue Hawks swept the Trojans 5-3 and 12-0.
Dakota State dipped their overall record to 3-29 and 1-13 in the DAC conference. Dickinson State improved their record to 19-9 and remained in sole possession of first place in the DAC with an 11-1 record.
Game 1 – Dickinson State 5, Dakota State 3
The Trojans scored its first run of the game in the top of the second inning. With bases loaded and one out situation for Dakota State, Beau Behrend recorded an RBI walk to score Seth Doxey.
Dickinson State answered with two runs in the bottom of the second frame. Liam Foran hit a 2-RBI single to score Logan Capp and Justin Elizondo to give the Blue Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Trojan Chance Hargrove was hit-by-pitch to open the third inning. Max Garza hit a double and advanced Hargrove to third base. A wild pitch by Dickinson State allowed Hargrove to score and tied the game at 2-2.
Hargrove hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning as the Trojans regain their lead at 3-2.
Russell Graham hit a double to start the bottom of the seventh frame for the Blue Hawks. Chase Doremus hit a two-out RBI single to score Graham as Dickinson State tied the game at 3-3. Derek Carley hit a two-run home run as the Blue Hawks sealed the win.
Hargrove was 2-for-3 behind the plate for Dakota State. Garza added two hits. Doxey and Conner Hargrove each added a single.
Carley recorded a home run, a single and two RBIs for the Blue Hawks. Willie Sandez added a double and a single.
The Trojans left eight runners on base. Dickinson State had seven runners left on base.
Brandon Womack (0-3) recorded the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits.
Bronson Collins started on the mound for Dickinson State. He gave up two runs on three hits in five innings. He recorded six strikeouts. Bobby Santoyo (2-1) recorded the win in two innings of work. He allowed one run on three hits.
Game 2 – Dickinson State 12, Dakota State 0 (7 innings)
Dickinson State put together a four-run in the opening inning for a 4-0 lead.
The Blue Hawks scored a combined eight runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. Dickinson State ended the game in the seventh inning by mercy-run rule.
Chaz Palmer had two singles for Dakota State. Cody Foreman and Andy Lee each added a single.
For Dickinson State, Carley recorded three singles and two RBIs. Capp had a home run. Sandez had three singles and three RBIs.
Tom Bailey (1-8) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He tossed three innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on six hits. Ted Wonnenberg worked two innings in relief. He gave up two runs on two hits. Andy Lee allowed six runs on three hits. Beau Behrend tossed one shutout inning and allowed two hits.
Erik Bastio (3-2) recorded a complete game victory for Dickinson State.
The Blue Hawks outhit the Trojans 13-4. Dickinson State left 14 runners on base compared to the Trojans' 3.
Dakota State steps out of the conference play on Monday. The Trojans return home to host in-state rival Mount Marty in a non-conference doubleheader at the Flynn Field. First game starts at 3 p.m.
