DSU Baseball drops two to Mount Marty at Flynn Field

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University baseball team returned home to conclude their six-game home stand. The Trojans played their first two against Mount Marty in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday at the Flynn Field. The Lancers swept the Trojans 12-7 and 11-8 in eight innings.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 3-31. Mount Marty won their fourth straight game to improve their record to 18-21.
Game 1 – Mount Marty 12, Dakota State 7
Jared Miller hit an RBI double to score Nathan Roche as Mount Marty scored its first run of the game in the opening inning.
Dakota State tied the game at 1-1 by Chance Hargrove’s RBI sacrifice fly to score Chaz Palmer.
Hargrove hit an RBI double to score Palmer in the bottom of the third inning to give DSU a 2-1 lead.
The Lancers produced six runs and seven hits in the top of the fourth frame to regain their lead at 7-2.
Mount Marty added four runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 11-2.
Max Garza hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to trim Lancers’ lead to 11-3. Jamie Barbour added an RBI ground out as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 11-4.
Logan Kortan recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Miller to give Mount Marty 12-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Ryan Steffensen hit a 2-RBI single to score Andy Lee (pinch runner for Derek Bohlander) and Palmer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Steffensen added a run caused by Lancers’ defensive error to trim their deficit to 12-7.
Dakota State was unable to mount a rally in the final inning as the Lancers secured the win.
Hargrove went 2-for-2 behind the plate for the Trojans. He had a double, a single and recorded two RBIs. Palmer, Steffensen and Seth Doxey each added two singles. Bohlander recorded a double. Cody Foreman added a single. Palmer swiped two bases.
For Mount Marty, Miller was perfect behind the plate, going 3-for-3. He had two doubles. Jason Schmidt had a solo home run. Dillion Lambley added two hits and recorded three RBIs.
The Lancers had 13 hits in the game compared to the Trojans’ 11 hits.
Connor Hargrove (0-3) took the loss on the mound for the Trojans. He tossed 3 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Ted Wonnenberg worked one inning in relief and gave up four runs on one hit. Barbour pitched the final three innings. He gave up one run on four hits.
Brian Bartlett (1-2) recorded the victory for the Lancers. He pitched five innings and allowed four runs on six hits. Mathias Godsil worked one inning and gave up three runs (one unearned) on four hits. Adam McVay pitched the seventh inning and limited DSU to one hit.
Game 2 – Mount Marty 11, Dakota State 8 (8 innings)
Sam Sparen hit an RBI double to score Lambley to give Mount Marty a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Dakota State put together a three-run bottom second inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Lancers scored three runs in the top of the third frame to regain their lead at 4-3 highlighted by Sparen’s 2-RBI double.
DSU’s Barbour hit a solo home run to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the third inning. It was his second home run of the season.
In the top of the fourth inning, Kortan hit an RBI double to score Jason Livermont to give the Lancers a 5-4 lead.
The Trojans regained their lead at 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs scored.
Mount Marty scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead back at 7-6.
Chance Hargrove hit a 2-run home run in the bottom sixth frame as Dakota State took an 8-7 lead.
Schmidt hit an RBI single with one out in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 8-8.
Dakota State was unable to score in the final inning as the Lancers extended the game in extra innings.
Mount Marty produced three runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it 11-8.
The Trojans were unable to score in the bottom of the eighth inning with two runners left on base.
Barbour and Chance Hargrove each had a home run for DSU. Palmer added two singles and recorded a stolen base. Lee and Steffensen each had a single.
Sparen had two doubles, a single and recorded three RBIs for the Lancers. He swiped two bases. Livermont added three singles. Johnson, Kortan and Miller each added a double.
Mount Marty outhit Dakota State 16-8. The Lancers committed four errors compared to the Trojans’ one.
Jake Weier started on the mound for DSU. He tossed four innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Doxey came in for three innings in relief. He gave up three runs on seven hits. Palmer (0-3) took the loss as he pitched 2/3 innings. He allowed one run on one hit. Brandon Womack worked 1/3 inning and allowed two runs on one hit.
Josh Engquist pitched the first 2 2/3 innings for the Lancers. He gave up four runs (three unearned) on four hits. Allen Hemeyer (3-3) recorded the win as he worked five innings in relief. He allowed four runs (two unearned) on four hits. Hemeyer recorded six strikeouts. McVay notched his second save of the season as he tossed 1/3 shutout inning.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column this weekend. The Trojans host Jamestown in their final DAC four-game series at the Flynn Field. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
