Trojans split with Mount Marty in non-conference softball action

YANKTON, S.D. – The Dakota State University softball team played their final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Thursday afternoon. The Trojans traveled to the Riverside Park to take on the Great Plains Athletic Conference member Mount Marty. The Lancers mounted a late rally to win the first game 6-5. DSU responded back in the second game with a 9-3 win to earn a split with the Lancers.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 13-20. Mount Marty dropped to 8-22 after their loss in the second game.
Game 1 – Mount Marty 6, Dakota State 5
After two scoreless innings, the Trojans sparked a five-run third inning. Jessica Shaw hit a double to open the inning. Natasha Fritz hit an RBI single to score Shaw for the game's first run. DSU added a run by Lancers' defensive error to make it 2-0. Jayna Ackerman added a 2-RBI single to make it 4-0. Emily Kulp hit an RBI single to score Ackerman to gain a 5-0 lead.
Mount Marty trimmed their deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning caused by DSU's defensive error.
With two outs and runners on third and first bases in the bottom of the seventh inning for MMC, Samantha Montiel hit a 3-run home run to trim DSU's lead to 5-4. The Lancers' next three batters reached on base by a walk, a single and an error. Michaela Bunde hit a 2-RBI single to score Renae Ramierz and Jen Jerdee as the Lancers mounted a furious rally.
Ackerman had a double and recorded two RBIs for Dakota State. Jesica Alcala, Fritz, Kulp, Alisa Balesteri and Shaw each added a single. Alcala swiped three bases.
Montiel went 3-for-4 behind the plate for Mount Marty. She recorded a home run, a double, a single and three RBIs. Kristin Loutsch added two singles. Merceedes Rickes, Jerdee, Brittney Bruns and Jena Peters each had a single.
The Lancers outhit the Trojans 10-6. Both teams committed four errors in the game.
Shaw was the starting pitcher on the mound for DSU. She tossed 6 2/3 innings and gave up four runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Brittany Tebbe (2-1) suffered the loss in relief. She allowed two unearned runs on two hits.
Peters (2-4) recorded a complete game win for the Lancers. She gave up five runs (two unearned) on six hits. Peters struck out five Trojans' batters.
Game 2 – Dakota State 9, Mount Marty 3
Dakota State opened the game with two straight hits by Alcala and Fritz. Ashley Stevenson hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Alcala to give DSU a 1-0 lead. Jessica McLane added an RBI walk with bases loaded situation as the Trojans extend their lead to 2-0.
The Trojans produced four runs in the top of the second inning to expand their lead to 6-0. Ashley Stevenson recorded a 2-RBI double. Ackerman added an RBI ground out and Kendra Knudson hit an RBI infield single.
Bunde hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Montiel in the bottom second frame as the Lancers trim DSU's lead to 6-1.
Mount Marty added a run in the bottom of the third inning by Ramirez's RBI single. The Trojans' lead was reduced to 6-2.
DSU made it 7-2 in the top fourth inning by Ackerman's RBI single to score Ashley Stevenson.
Lancer Amanda Soehl hit a triple with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ramirez hit an RBI single to score Soehl to cut their deficit to 7-3.
Dakota State added two runs in the final inning to make it 9-3.
Ashley Stevenson had a double, a single and two runs scored for DSU. Alcala, Knudson and Balesteri each added two singles. Ackerman recorded two RBIs. Fritz and Amanda Stevenson each added a single. Alcala and Ashley Stevenson swiped one base.
For Mount Marty, Ramirez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Soehl had a triple. Bunde added a single.
DSU outhit the Lancers 11-4. Mount Marty suffered seven errors in the game compared to the Trojans' two.
Balesteri tossed a complete game victory for DSU. She allowed three runs (two unearned) on four hits. She recorded four strikeouts.
Erica Loutsch was the losing pitcher for MMC. She worked the first two innings and gave up six runs (two unearned) on seven hits. Bruns pitched five innings in relief. She allowed three runs (two unearned) on four hits. Bruns recorded six strikeouts.
Dakota State returns back home for their final four-game Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) series this weekend. The Trojans host Jamestown in a doubleheader on Saturday. First game is slated to start at 1 p.m. at the Thue Softball Complex.
