DSU Baseball suffers sweep from Jamestown Saturday

MADISON, S.D. - In the final Dakota Athletic Conference four-game series at Flynn Field, the Dakota State University baseball team hosted Jamestown in a windy doubleheader Saturday. The Trojans suffered lost a pair of games 5-1 and 18-2 in seven innings.
DSU dipped their overall record to 3-33 and 1-15 in the DAC conference. Jamestown raised their record to 24-10-1 and 12-6 in the conference.
Game 1 - Jamestown 5, Dakota State 1
Dakota State scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning. Ryan Steffensen recorded a walk with one out. Chance Hargrove added a single and advanced Steffensen to second base. Max Garza reached on base by JC's defensive error and scored Steffensen to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Andy Racus hit a 2-RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to give JC a 2-1 lead. Tim Penner added an RBI single to extend Jimmies' lead to 3-1.
Jamestown added two runs in the top of the fifth frame to make it 5-1.
Dakota State was unable to score in the final inning.
Hargrove, Seth Doxey and Kyle Braun each had a single for DSU. Steffensen recorded two walks and swiped one base. Garza added an RBI and a walk. Connor Hargrove recorded a walk.
For Jamestown, Penner went 2-for-3 with a double, a single and an RBI. Racus added two singles and an RBI. Griffin Sweazey had two hits. Max Boe and Keith Woelber each had a single.
JC recorded nine hits in the game compared to the Trojans' three.
Dakota State recorded three double plays in the game. Jamestown had two double plays.
Brandon Womack (0-4) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed six innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits. Chaz Palmer pitched a shutout seventh inning.
Anthony Fagan (3-0) was the winning pitcher for the Jimmies. He worked the first four innings and gave up an unearned run on two hits. He struck out four DSU batters. Chad Boldt pitched two innings in relief. Paul Roers worked the seventh inning and gave up a hit.
Game 2 - Jamestown 18, Dakota State 2 (7 innings)
Sweazey, Racus and Penner each recorded an RBI single in the opening inning to give the Jimmies a 3-0 lead.
Jamestown added five runs in the top of the second frame. Sweazey hit a 3-run home run and Conor Cook added a 2-run home run to extend JC's lead to 8-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Jamestown recorded eight runs and eight hits to give the Jimmies a 16-0 lead. Jamestown added two more runs in the fifth inning to make it 18-0.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the bottom of the fifth inning to trim their deficit to 18-2. Braun hit an RBI single to score Jamie Barbour for DSU's first run of the game. Beau Behrend added an RBI fielder's choice for their second run.
Jamestown ended the game in the seventh inning due to mercy run rule.
Barbour and Derek Bohlander each had a single and a run scored. Andy Lee and Braun each added a single. Braun and Behrend each recorded an RBI.
Sweazey had a home run, two doubles and four RBIs for JC. Woelber and Ramirez each had a double. Penner had three singles.
Jamestown outhit the Trojans 21-4. The Jimmies recorded three double plays in the game.
Jake Weier (0-2) pitched two innings in losing effort for Dakota State. He allowed eight runs on eight hits. Behrend tossed two innings in relief and gave up eight runs (six unearned) on eight hits. Lee pitched the final three innings. He allowed two runs on five hits.
Brennan Grubb (2-1) recorded the win for the Jimmies. He tossed three shutout innings. Ryan Iliff pitched two innings in relief. He gave up two runs on three hits. Iliff recorded four strikeouts. Chris Combo worked the final two innings.
Dakota State will host Jamestown in the DAC regular season doubleheader finale on Sunday. The doubleheader will start at 12 p.m. at the Flynn Field.
