Two Madison basketball standouts sign to play for Trojan Basketball

Shannon Spurgin and Michael Sullivan with DSU women's basketball (Joe Reints) and men's basketball (Gary Garner) head coachesTwo Madison High School standouts - Shannon Spurgin and Michael Sullivan - have signed letters-of-intent to play for Dakota State University basketball teams next season.

Spurgin will join the Trojan women's basketball team.  She played under DSU alum head coach Mat Nelson.  In 2011, Spurgin was the starter on the Madison Bulldogs that finished sixth at the State Class 'A' Basketball tournament with a 19-7 overall record.  She averaged 9.3 points, 2.1 assists and 2.5 steals in her senior year.

Spurgin was chosen as the Outstanding Female Athlete at Madison High School.  She was two-time All-Conference.  Spurgin was voted as the team's most valuable defensive player in her junior and senior seasons.  She was named to 'Hometown Hero of Character' and All-State Academic.

Shannon is the daughter of Larry Allen and Lori Spurgin.

Sullivan has agreed to join the DSU men's basketball team.  He had a stellar high school basketball career, coached under Mike Ricke.  Sullivan was part of the Madison boys' basketball team that captured 2009 and 2010 State Class 'A' Championships.

Sullivan holds the Madison High School single season records in 3-point field goals made (82), 3-point field goal attempts (183) and tied the school record for 3-point field goal percentage in a single season (45 percent).  He currently holds career records in 3-point field goals made (149) and 3-point field goal attempts (385).

During Sullivan's career at Madison, he shot 43.6 percent from the field (254-for-582).  He amassed 699 points, 76 steals and 117 assists.

Sullivan was selected to All-Conference honors.  He was voted the team's offensive most valuable player.

Michael is the son of Mark and Kelly Sullivan.
