Dakota State travels to Grand View Tournament to begin 2011 season

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University volleyball team makes its 2011 season debut on Friday when the Trojans travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the Grand View Tournament. Dakota State will play four matches in two days at the Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center.
MATCH TIMES: The Grand View Tournament gets underway for the Trojans at 6 p.m. on Friday when they face Evangel (Mo.). The action on Friday night continues when DSU squares off against St. Xavier (Ill.) at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the Trojans take on College of St. Mary (Neb.) at 12 p.m. and Park (Mo.) at 2 p.m. All times are central.
DSU MAKES TRANSITION TO A.I.I.: Starting this fall, Dakota State makes their transition to Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.). The Trojans competed in their final year of Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) last season.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State and Evangel met in the Grand View Tournament on Aug. 28, 2010 in their last meeting. The Crusaders swept the Trojans in three straight sets -- 25-15, 25-12 and 25-12. DSU and College of St. Mary met in the Hastings Tournament on Sept. 11, 2009. The Flames defeated the Trojans in four sets -- 25-18, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-20. Dakota State will meet St. Xavier and Park for the first time.
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her third season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached an All-Conference player and five NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes. Jessica VanLoy is in her first season as an assistant coach. She will guide the Trojans' junior varsity volleyball program this fall.
LOOKING BACK: Last season, the Trojans finished sixth in the final year of the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) with a conference record of 4-10. Dakota State's overall record for the 2010 season was 11-22. The Trojans fell to Minot State in the first round of the DAC Postseason Tournament quarterfinals on Nov. 6, 2010 in Minot, N.D.

UP NEXT: On Aug. 31, the Trojans travel to Sioux City, Iowa to play Morningside. The match is set to begin at 7;30 p.m. at RVSC-Allee Gym.
