Trojans win two; lose two in Corn Palace volleyball classic

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota State University volleyball team played in the two-day Corn Palace Classic Friday and Saturday. The Trojans lost twice on Friday and won twice on Saturday.
Dakota State split four matches at the classic to move their record to 3-6 overall.
In the first match of the classic on Friday afternoon, Montana State-Northern swept DSU in three straight sets – 25-14, 25-14 and 26-24. The Trojans had a killing efficiency of .063, while MSU-Northern had a .219 killing percentage.
Kristen DiPaola had 10 kills for the Trojans. Stephanie Kruggel added seven kills. Stacey Schuller contributed 18 set assists. Katie Green led DSU’s defense with 21 digs. Kruggel added 15 digs, one solo block and three block assists.
Kelsey Willaims led MSU-Northern with 12 kills. Nahe Keanaaina had 28 assists. Holly Cartwright recorded 25 digs.
Dakota State played their former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foe Valley City State in Friday’s nightcap. The Trojans lost in a hard-fought match in five sets won by VCSU – 18-25, 28-26, 25-20, 20-25 and 15-13.
No statistics were provided for DSU. It will become available later.
The Trojans met their second former DAC team – Dickinson State – on Saturday morning. Dakota State swept the Blue Hawks in three straight sets for the first time in as many meetings with Dickinson State since joining the DAC in 2000. The Trojans recorded a 25-19, 25-21 and 26-24 win over Dickinson State.
Kruggel, Lauren LaBar and DiPaola each had 11 kills for Dakota State. Schuller had 35 assists. Green had 11 digs and Kruggel added 10 digs.
Ebony Sanders had nine kills and 14 digs for the Blue Hawks. Kelsey Chan had 25 assists.
Dakota State outhit the Blue Hawks 42-27 and .266 to .087.
The Trojans won the final match of the Corn Palace Classic with a five-set victory over in-state and host team Dakota Wesleyan. The Trojans won by the scores of 22-25, 25-13, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-10.
Kruggel had a match-high 19 kills for Dakota State. DiPaola added 16 kills. Schuller recorded 44 assists. LaBar, Mandi Atkins and DiPaola each had three service aces.
Green had 13 digs for DSU’s defense. LaBar added 11 digs.
For Dakota Wesleyan, Larissa Veldhuizen had 13 kills. Danielle Bird added 11 kills. Briana Jung recorded 24 assists and TyAnn Buddenhagen added 14 digs.
Brooke Warne led the Tigers’ defense with 25 digs. Jung added 15 digs and three service aces.
Dakota State had 52 kills in the match compared to DWU 40. The Trojans had 11 services aces while the Tigers recorded three.
Dakota State looks to extend their winning streak on Wednesday night as they return home for the first time this season. The Trojans host Mount Marty at the DSU Fieldhouse. Junior varsity match begins at 6 p.m. with a varsity match to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
