Trojans struggle in final day of Hastings Quality Inn Volleyball Classic

HASTINGS, Neb. – After dropping two matches in the first day of the Hastings Quality Inn volleyball classic Friday afternoon, Dakota State was looking to bounce back in the winning column on Saturday. The Trojans were unable to record a win in the final day of the classic, losing to McPherson (Kan.) and nationally-ranked Doane in three straight sets each.
Dakota State suffered their fourth straight defeat and dropped their overall record to 4-10.
DSU lost the first match to McPherson. The Bulldogs won the first two sets by an identical score of 25-22 and won the third set 25-12.
Stephanie Kruggel led the Trojans’ offense attack with 10 kills. Kristen DiPaola added eight kills. Stacey Schuller produced 23 set assists.
Katie Green and Schuller each had 14 digs for DSU. Kruggel recorded three block assists.
Dakota State recorded a .117 killing efficiency in the match and committed 16 attack errors.
No statistics were reported for McPherson.
Doane, No. 11 in the latest NAIA Volleyball national poll, swept the Trojans by the score of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-20 to extend Tigers’ winning streak to 14.
Kruggel had nine kills for DSU. Caitlin Pick and DiPaola each had six kills. Schuller recorded 25 assists.
Green and Stephanie Uher each had 14 digs for Trojans’ defense. Kruggel contributed four block assists.
As a team, DSU recorded a hitting percentage of .173 with 29 kills and 12 errors in 98 attempts.
No statistics were reported for Doane.
Dakota State looks to end their four-match losing streak as they head to Aberdeen, S.D. on Wednesday night. The Trojans take on NCAA Division III Presentation (S.D.). First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Strode Center.
