Trojans snap Chargers’ winning streak in five-set thriller

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University volleyball team returned home Friday night as they hosted Briar Cliff of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Trojans snapped Chargers’ three-match winning streak in five-set thriller at DSU Fieldhouse (25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-7).
DSU won their second straight match and improved their overall record to 6-10. Briar Cliff dropped their record to 3-11.
Dakota State opened the set with a 10-4 scoring tear. BC scored six straight points to tie the first set at 10-10. With DSU leading at 20-19, the Trojans secured the first set victory by using a 5-3 run.
The Chargers raced to a 16-8 lead in the second set. The Trojans went on a 13-4 run to take their first lead of the second set at 21-20. BC closed out with five straight points, three by DSU’s attack errors, to secure the second set at 25-21 and tied the match at 1-1.
DSU opened the third set with a 13-6 lead and went on to win (25-17) for a 2-1 match lead.
The Trojans led 12-6 in the fourth set before the Chargers recorded 10 consecutive points to take the lead at 16-12. The Trojans rallied to tie the fourth set at 19-19. At 23-23, Briar Cliff nailed down two consecutive kills to force the fifth and deciding set.
After being tied for three times early in the fifth set (3-3), the Trojans used a 7-1 scoring tear to grab a 10-4 lead. Dakota State secured the match victory with a 15-7 fifth set win.
Stephanie Kruggel led the Trojans’ offense with 21 kills and a killing efficiency of .302. Kristen DiPaola added 10 kills. Stacey Schuller produced 47 set assists.
Katie Green recorded 22 digs for DSU. DiPaola had 18 digs. Mandi Atkins and Schuller each had 13 digs. Taylor Mosco had six block assists. Caitlin Pick added four block assists.
For Briar Cliff, Marissa Van Driel recorded 14 kills with a killing efficiency of .394. Brooke Maguire added 12 kills. Erin Frank contributed 37 assists.
Liz Krog had 18 digs for the Chargers. Inglish Hartwig and Amber Skoglund each had 15 digs. Maguire and Sarah Wieseler each had four block assists.
Both teams were almost evenly matched in almost every statistical category. The Trojans had one more kill than the Chargers (53-52) and four more set assists (50-46). BC had five more digs than DSU (96-91).
Dakota State recorded eight service aces compared to the Chargers’ four. Briar Cliff committed 10 service errors, while DSU had nine.
DSU looks to extend their winning streak as they return on the road on Tuesday night. The Trojans face Mount Marty in the second meeting of the season (DSU won the first meeting 3-0 in Madison on Sept. 7). The junior varsity starts at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7:30 p.m.
