DSU spikers sweep season series with Saints

MADISON, S.D. – Kristen DiPaola smashed 19 kills and Stephanie Kruggel tallied 10 kills to lead Dakota State to a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-14 and 25-18) over NCAA Division III Presentation (S.D.) Wednesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State recorded its fifth victory in the last six matches (suffered a 3-1 defeat to NCAA Division II South Dakota Mines on Sept. 23) to improve their overall record to 9-11. Presentation dropped their record to 2-14.
The Trojans raised their home matches’ record to 4-1 this season.
There were five ties to start the opening set. With DSU leading at 20-18, the Trojans closed the first set with five straight points for a 25-18 win.
DSU started strong in the second set, jumping to a 9-2 lead. The Trojans secured the second set win by the score of 25-14 and give DSU a 2-0 match lead.
Presentation went on to lead at 11-7 in the third set. With PC leading at 17-14, DSU went on to score seven straight points (three kills from DiPaola) as the Trojans regained the lead at 21-17. DSU scored the final four points of the match for a third set victory (25-18).
Stacey Schuller contributed 32 set assists for Dakota State. She had four service aces.
Mandi Atkins led DSU’s defense with eight digs. Lauren LaBar and Schuller each added seven digs. Cailtin Pick had two block assists.
For PC, Megan Goedert had 13 kills. Kelli Boekelheide added six kills. Haley Boisjolie produced 16 assists.
Kelsey Schmidt had 14 digs and two service aces for the Saints.
DSU outhit Presentation 41-27 in the match. The Trojans recorded a .359 hitting percentage compared to the Saints’ .088.
Dakota State heads on the road this weekend to visit a pair of former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foes. The Trojans head to Mayville, N.D. on Friday night to take on Mayville State. First serve from Lewy Lee Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m. DSU travels to Valley City, N.D. on Saturday evening for the third meeting of the season with Valley City State. The match is set to start at 5 p.m.
