Bulldogs use big third quarter to defeat Trojans in football action Saturday

Brandon LargeSEWARD, Neb. - The Dakota State University football team traveled to Bulldog Stadium to visit Concordia (Neb.) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon.  With the score tied at 14-14 at halftime, the Bulldogs outscored the Trojans 35-7 in the third quarter and defeated DSU 49-21.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-6. Concordia won their third straight game to lift their record to 3-2.

For the first time this season, DSU took the first lead of the game. Brandon Large connected to Carl Curtis for a 29-yard touchdown pass to give the Trojans a 6-0 lead. Zach Ely’s PAT kick was blocked. Dakota State used six plays for 66 yards in two minutes and 50 seconds in their opening drive of the game.

Wes DauzConcordia answered back after DSU scored. Ryan Adams scored a 1-yard touchdown run. The Bulldog used six plays for 65 yards in 2:50 for their scoring drive. Kenny Zoeller added a PAT kick to give Concordia a 7-6 lead.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 14-6 in second quarter. Cohl Tufford recorded a 65-yard touchdown run. Zoellner’s PAT kick was good.

Dakota State tied the game at 14-14 with less than two minutes before intermission as Large threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ely. DSU used nine plays for 75 yards in 3:14 in their scoring drive.

Eric LilesConcordia scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter to widen their lead to 42-14.

The Trojans broke their scoring drought with 1:34 left in the third quarter. Large threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Wes Dauz. Dennis Lechner added the PAT kick as the Trojans trimmed their deficit to 42-21.

Adams scored the final touchdown of the game (1-yard run) with 17 seconds left in the third quarter for the Bulldogs. Zoeller added the PAT kick to give CU a 49-21 lead.

Both teams were unable to score in the final quarter.

Large completed 31 of 46 passes for 279 yards and three scores for DSU. Dauz hauled in ten passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Robert Ortiz added eight catches for 41 yards. Jeb Olsen rushed 18 times for 63 yards.

Tufford rushed 16 times for 208 yards with one score for Concordia. He was 3-for-8 in passing with 47 yards and a touchdown. Adams recorded three rushing touchdowns.

Eric Liles led DSU’s defense with 11 tackles. Jeffrey Trapp had a fumble recovery.

Derek Rodine had nine tackles for the Bulldogs.

Concordia used nine rushers to amass 456 yards in 52 carries for the game. The Trojans recorded a total of 66 rushing yards.

DSU had 279 passing yards compared to the Bulldogs’ 55.

Dakota State heads to Nebraska for the second straight week. The Trojans visit Hastings College on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Hastings, Neb.
