Dakota State drops pair of volleyball matches in North Dakota

MAYVILLE and VALLEY CITY, N.D. - For the first time this season, the Dakota State University volleyball team traveled to North Dakota last weekend to visit two former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foes. The Trojans suffered defeats to Mayville State on Friday night and Valley City State on Saturday evening.
The pair of losses dropped Trojans’ overall record to 9-13.
Mayville State won their fourth straight match with a 3-1 win over Dakota State at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. The Comets (16-7 overall record) won by the scores of 25-22, 25-17, 24-26 and 25-15.
Stephanie Kruggel led DSU’s offense with 18 kills. Caitlin Pick and Kristen DiPaola each added 12 kills. Stacey Schuller contributed 50 set assists.
Mandi Atkins had 20 digs for the Trojans. Katie Green added 18 digs. Kruggel and Pick each had three block assists.
For Mayville State, Brittany Olson recorded 16 kills. Nikki Roholt added 14 kills. Laura Kolness produced 24 assists. Ariana Odegard added 23 assists.
Emily Liljestrand recorded 19 digs for the Comets. Ashley Torgusson recorded 11 digs. Roholt and Anderson each had five block assists.
Mayville State outhit the Trojans 57-54 and .308-.243. The Comets had 13 blocks compared to the Trojans’ six.
Valley City State dominated DSU on Saturday evening at Graichen Gym. The Vikings swept the Trojans in three straight sets (25-8, 25-18 and 25-23).
VCSU wins the season series 2-1 after the first two meetings were decided in five sets.
DiPaola led DSU with 10 kills. Kruggel added nine kills. Schuller had 26 assists.
Kruggel recorded 15 digs for the Trojans. Atkins added 11 digs.
Three players recorded in double digits kills for the Vikings. Rebekah DePesa had 14 kills. Jill Noeske had 12 kills. Kadee Melby added 11 kills. Anna Neufeld produced 39 set assists.
Neufeld contributed 12 digs for VCSU. Mardee Landee added 11 digs.
The Vikings outhit DSU 50-27.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the win column on Tuesday night. The Trojans travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on Briar Cliff University. The junior varsity match starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity match to follow at 7:30 p.m.
