Trojan runners return back to action at Briar Cliff Invitational Saturday

THIS WEEK: After taking a week off, Dakota State's cross country teams return back to action on Saturday morning as they run in the Briar Cliff Invitational in McCook Lake, S.D. (north of Sioux City, Iowa). The women's race starts at 10 a.m. with the men's race to follow at 10:45 a.m.
BRIAR CLIFF INVITATIONAL: Briar Cliff, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, will host its annual meet at the Adams Preserve in McCook Lake, S.D. The women will run a 5,000-meter meet, while the men will run an 8,000-meter course. Besides DSU and host-team Briar Cliff, the following participating teams that are expected to run: Doane, Dordt, Northwestern (Iowa), Mount Marty, Dakota Wesleyan, University of Sioux Falls, Augustana, Morningside, Nebraska-Omaha, Midland, Hastings, Iowa Lakes Community College and Iowa Western Community College. Over 300 runners combined are expected to run in the races.
TROJANS IN LAST YEAR'S BC MEET: DSU men's team finished fourth out of 15 teams with 131 points. Matt Fideler finished eighth with a time of 25 minutes and 36.09 seconds. Andy Coy was 14th in 26:01.82. The women's team was 12th with 311 points. Stephanie Warnke placed 22nd with a time of 18:51.80.
LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans competed in the tough Roy Griak Invitational that features schools from NAIA to NCAA levels in the Midwest on Sept. 24. The Trojan women's team did not field a complete team, while Stephanie Warnke placed 92nd with a time of 24:35.3. DSU men's team totaled 417 points for a 15th place finish in the 27-teams affair. The Trojans were the third highest NAIA team to place in the meet. Andy Coy recorded the third fastest NAIA runner in the meet with a 19th-place finish in 25:57.5. Matt Fideler was 27th in 26:09.2.
INDEPENDENT RANKINGS: DSU men's team remains third in the weekly independent's rankings and received votes to the NAIA 'Top 25' poll on Sept. 28. The Trojan women's team ranks fifth.
COACHES' CORNER: Buzz Stevenson returns back to head cross country coach this fall. He has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains Athletic Region Cross Country Coach of the Year awards. Stevenson has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his first year as an assistant coach in cross country. He competed for the Trojan cross country and track teams. He holds numerous records and was a two-time NAIA All-American athlete. Drealan also helped DSU win its first-ever Dakota Athletic Conference championship in cross country during the fall of 2009.

UP NEXT: Dakota State will have their final tune-up on Oct. 22. The Trojans compete in the Graphic Edge Invitational, hosted by Mount Marty, in Yankton, S.D.
