Hastings defeat Trojans in football action Saturday

Blake SchlagelHASTINGS, Neb. – Hastings College limited Dakota State to 21 rushing yards in the game as the Broncos defeated the Trojans 44-14 Saturday afternoon at Lloyd Wilson Field.

The Trojans dropped their overall record to 0-7. Hastings improved their record to 3-2.

The Broncos scored the first points of the game as Johnny Garcia made a 22-yeard field goal to give HC a 3-0 lead with seven minutes and 38 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Bryce LoganAs DSU recovered a fumble from a quarterback sack on Hastings’ 13-yard line, the Trojans scored the next play. Brandon Large connected to Mike Curtis for 13-yards to give DSU a 6-3 lead with less than two minutes in the first quarter. Dennis Lecher’s PAT kick was no good.

HC scored right away from DSU’s ensuring kickoff to regain their lead. Tyson Buresh returned a 90-yard kick-off for a touchdown and Garcia’s PAT was good to give Hastings a 10-6 lead.

Hastings outscored the Trojans 21-0 in the second quarter as the Broncos extended their lead to 31-6 by halftime.

Zach ElyThe Broncos added a score in the third quarter as Matt Overmiller threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Mike Novicki. The PAT kick by Garcia was good as Broncos’ lead grew to 38-6 with 9:36 left in the third quarter.

Dakota State used eight plays for 80 yards in 2:21 for their next score. Large threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ely. The Trojans converted the two-point PAT attempt as DSU trimmed HC’s lead to 38-14 with 14:27 left in regulation.

Garcia added two field goals in the final quarter (34-yard and 32-yard) as the Broncos sealed the win.

Mike CurtisLarge was 24-for-44 for 196 yards for DSU. He had two touchdowns and recorded two interceptions. Ely had seven catches for 88 yards and a score. Curtis added six receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown.

John Dostal went 9-for-19 for 152 yards with a touchdown for Hastings. He rushed nine times for 72 yards and a touchdown. Keenen Ballage rushed 19 times for 99 yards and a score. Nathan Arlt had a reception for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Eric Liles and Dominik Namken each had 12 tackles for the Trojans. Bryce Logan had a fumble recovery and returned it for 21 yards. Blake Schlagel recorded a quarterback sack and forced a fumble.

Hastings rushed 49 times for 286 yards compared to the Trojans’ five carries for 21 yards. The Broncos outgained DSU 490-201 in total yards.

DSU returns back home on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Trojans look to snap their losing streak as they host Briar Cliff in the annual cancer awareness game (‘Rushing for a Cure’). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Trojan Field.
