Dakota State tops Minnesota-Morris in four sets

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State used a combined 46 kills from Stephanie Kruggel, Lauren LaBar and Kristen DiPaola to top NCAA Division III University of Minnesota-Morris 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 25-27 and 25-19) Tuesday night at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans hosted its annual ‘Dig Pink’ event.
Dakota State raised their overall record to 11-14 and improved their home record to 6-1. University of Minnesota-Morris dropped to 12-7.
The Trojans scored seven straight points from Katie Green to open the match. UMM answered back with a 13-7 scoring run to trim DSU’s lead at 14-13. DSU used a 10-5 run to extend their lead to 24-18 before the Cougars scored four straight points (24-22). The Trojans closed out the first set with a 25-22 win. DSU outhit UMM 18-3 in the first set and .316 to -.033.
In the second set, DSU raced to a 5-1 lead (which included three kills by Stephanie Kruggel). The Trojans went on to seal the second set with a 25-19 win for a 2-0 match lead.
The Trojans used their biggest lead of the third set at 13-8. With DSU leading at 24-22, the Cougars saved two match points with two kills from Kaylie Auch to tie the third set at 24-24. UMM scored the final three points of the third set to extend the match.
DSU scored the first four points of the fourth set for a 4-0 lead. The Trojans extended to the biggest lead at 11-6. DSU went on to secure the match win with a 25-19 fourth set victory.
Three players recorded in double-double for the Trojans. Kruggel led both DSU’s offense with 20 kills and recorded 16 digs. DiPaola added 16 kills and 12 digs. LaBar had 10 kills and 11 digs. Cailtin Pick had seven kills. Stacey Schuller contributed 44 set assists.
Katie Green led Trojans’ defense with 18 digs. Mandi Atkins added 10 digs. Kruggel had two block solos and two block assists.
For Minnesota-Morris, Auch had a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs. Stephanie Schmiesing added eight kills. Natalie Thomas had 30 assists and recorded four service aces.
Kaylie Clark led Cougars’ defense with 18 digs. Brita Humphrey and Thomas each had 13 digs. Schmiesing recoded seven block assists. Jennifer LaRoque added a block solo and six block assists.
DSU outhit the Cougars 54-39 in the match. The Trojans held UMM to .089 hitting percentage (DSU had a .176 hitting percentage). The Cougars committed 26 attack errors compared to the Trojans’ 27.
Minnesota-Morris had 11 blocks compared to DSU five. DSU had 81 digs, while the Cougars had 72 digs.
Dakota State looks to extend their winning streak as they head on the on the road Saturday afternoon. The Trojans take part in the Waldorf triangular for a pair of matches from the Midwest Collegiate Conference. Dakota State faces the host-team Waldorf at 2 p.m., followed by a match with AIB (Iowa) at approximately 4 p.m. The matches will be played at Hanson Fieldhouse in Forest City, Iowa.
