Garner gets his 400th career win as Trojans stump Grace

MADISON, S.D. – After Dakota State got off with a sluggish start, the Trojans used a 12-0 spurt midway of the first-half to give DSU a 79-53 season opener win over Grace Tuesday night at DSU Fieldhouse. The win gave DSU men’s basketball head coach Gary Garner No. 400 career collegiate win that include coaching stints at Kempe Military Academy, Missouri Southern State College, Drake University and Southeast Missouri State.
Since Garner’s arrival at Dakota State, the Trojans won its third straight season opener. Grace dropped their overall record to 0-1.
The Trojans scored the game’s first four points from Cameron Krump and Donald Stewart. Grace grabbed their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 14 minutes and 51 seconds left in the first-half.
With Grace leading at 15-13 with 7:40 left before halftime, Dakota State scored 12 straight points to grab a 25-15 lead with 4:53 left in the first-half. The Trojans extended their lead to 37-20 at halftime.
The Royals committed 25 turnovers in the game’s first 20 minutes compared to the Trojans’ 11. DSU scored 23 points off from Grace’s turnovers, while the Royals scored two off from DSU’s turnovers.
Grace could get no closer than 16 points on two occasions (62-46 and 65-49) as DSU cruised in the second half. The Trojans outscored the Royals 42-33 in the second-half.
Four players scored in double digits for Dakota State. Stewart scored 20 points on his 8-for-13 from the field (including 2-for-2 from the 3-point line) and 2-for-5 from the free-throw line. He had seven rebounds. Krump recorded a double-double of 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Spencer Adams added 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jesse Bean added 12 points.
Keith Biggers scored seven points and nailed down seven boards off the bench for DSU. Yusef Gray and Jordan Snyder each had five steals. Snyder added six rebounds.
For Grace, Jonathan Loutzenhiser had 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Levi Entz added 10 points. JJ Hartung scored 10 points off the bench.
Dakota State grabbed 24 offensive rebounds in the game compared to the Royals’ seven. The Trojans outrebounded the Royals 50-38.
Both teams struggled from the field. DSU shot 39.7 percent (31-for-78) compared to Grace 38.8 percent (19-for-49). The Trojans shot 43.2 percent in the second-half, while Grace as 38.5 percent from the field.
The Royals committed 35 turnovers compared to the Trojans’ 18. DSU recorded 17 steals compared to Grace eight steals.
