DSU women’s hoopsters lose first game of the season

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Dakota State University women’s basketball team faced their former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Mayville State Saturday evening at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. The Trojans suffered their first road loss this season as the Comets defeated DSU 87-62.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 1-1. Mayville State remained undefeated in six games this season.
The Comets scored seven consecutive points to start the game in the first three minutes. DSU answered back by scoring eight straight points for an 8-7 lead with 14 minutes and 43 seconds left in the first-half.
Mayville State went on another run with a 19-7 scoring tear to regain their lead to 27-14 with less than nine minutes before half-time.
The Trojans trimmed their deficit to nine points as Mayville State grabbed a 44-35 lead at halftime.
MaSU started the second-half with a 15-2 run to extend their lead to 59-37 with 14:35 left in regulation. The Comets outscored the Trojans 43-27 in the final 20 minutes of the game to secure the victory.
Sharee Galbraith led the Trojans’ offense with 14 points. She pulled down nine rebounds. Kylie Westover added 10 points. Cassie Jacobsen had eight points. Jayda Swenson and Courtney Hamblin each had seven rebounds.
Four players scored in double digits for Mayville State. Ashley Holmstrom shot 8-for-10 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw line for 21 points. She grabbed eight rebounds. Megan Groen added 16 points and pulled down six rebounds. Hailey Longtin had 15 points. Erin Ericson scored 10 points. Kay Laforet dished out six assists.
The Comets shot 41.8 percent from the field (28-for-67) compared to the Trojans’ 35.1 percent (20-for-57). Mayville State converted 23 free-throws in 29 attempts (79.3 percent), while DSU was 18-for-25 (72 percent) from the free-throw line.
Dakota State committed 31 turnovers in the game compared to the Comets’ 20. Mayville State outscored the Trojans 37-15 in points off turnovers.
DSU looks to bounce back in the winning column Tuesday night. The Trojans face their in-state rival Mount Marty. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Cimpl Arena in Yankton, S.D.
