Lancers defeat DSU in women’s basketball action Tuesday night

YANKTON, S.D. – The Dakota State University women's basketball team traveled to Cimpl Arena to take on their in-state rival Mount Marty College Tuesday night. The Lancers used late first-half and early second-half runs to defeat the Trojans 70-49.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 1-2. Mount Marty, receiving votes to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Poll, raised their record to 3-1.
DSU and Mount Marty traded leads four times in the first 14 minutes of the game. With DSU leading 23-22 with 6:08 left before intermission, the Lancers used a 14-4 run to close the first half for a 36-27 halftime lead.
The Trojans could get no closer than seven points at 42-35 with 15:13 left in regulation. Mount Marty used a 16-7 run in a span of ten minutes for a 58-42 lead with 5:11 remaining in the game. The Lancers secured the win with a 12-7 closing run.
Mount Marty outscored DSU 34-22 in second-half.
Julie Munson and Courtney Hamblin each scored 12 points for the Trojans. Kylie Westover added nine points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Sharee Galbraith added six points and grabbed 10 rebounds for DSU. Jayda Swenson had six points and six rebounds off the bench.
For Mount Marty, Taylor Forsch scored 25 points. She shot 9-for-17 from the field, including 5-for-8 from the 3-point arc. Kylie Gross added 11 points and recorded six rebounds.
Allison DeKam had 11 rebounds for the Lancers. Forsch dished out four assists and recorded four steals.
Dakota State had three more rebounds than MMC (49-46). The Trojans suffered 21 turnovers, while the Lancers committed eight turnovers.
Both teams struggled from the field, shooting under 40 percent. The Lancers shot 37.3 percent (25-for-67) compared to the Trojans' 31.5 percent (17-for-54).
Dakota State returns home on Friday afternoon to start their brief two-game home stand. The Trojans host York (Neb.). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
