Trojans’ second-half surge fell short to in-state rival DWU in men’s basketball action

MADISON, S.D. – As Dakota State trailed at 37-25 by intermission with in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan, the Trojans used a strong second-half surge as they rallied back. DSU fell short after missing two opportunities as time expired to allow DWU win 70-69 Tuesday night at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State dropped back to .500 with an overall record of 3-3. DWU, which won their 12th straight meeting with DSU, raised their record to 5-1.
The Trojans opened the game with six points from three different scorers (Donald Stewart, Cameron Krump and Jesse Bean). DSU would extend their lead to 11-3 with less than 15 minutes left in the first-half.
DWU answered back by scoring nine straight points to grab their first lead of the game at 12-11 with less than 13 minutes before halftime.
With the Tigers leading at 20-19 with 5:55 left before intermission, DWU would close the first-half with a 17-6 run to grab a 12-point lead at halftime.
Dakota State shot 10-for-16 in the first 8:48 of the second-half and used a 23-11 run to tie the game at 48-48. DWU shot 5-for-16 during that span.
DSU and DWU traded leads for nearly seven minutes. At 63-63, a 3-pointer by DWU Justin Nelson and a field goal by Luke Bamberg gave the Tigers a five-point lead (68-63) with 3:24 remaining in the game.
Keith Biggers hit a lay-up as DSU trimmed their deficit to one-point with 48 seconds left in regulation.
A turnover by DWU with 14 seconds left gave a last chance for the Trojans. DSU was unable to convert their scoring chances as they missed two shots at the buzzer.
Dakota State shot 51.4 percent (18-for-35) from the field in the game's final 20 minutes.
Bean scored 15 points for the Trojans (13 points in the second-half). Biggers added 12 points off the bench and grabbed six rebounds. Spencer Adams added nine points, dished out four assists and pulled down six boards. Stewart had eight points and eight rebounds. Krump added eight points and seven rebounds. Yusef Gray recorded four assists.
For Dakota Wesleyan, Mike Lee had 13 points. Carde Pennington scored nine points off the bench. Nelson and Jalen Voss each added eight points. Jordan Long and Kristopher Wilson each had six rebounds. Long dished out five assists.
DSU shot 44.3 percent from the field (27-for-61) compared to the Tigers' 38.1 percent (24-for-63).
DWU was near-perfect from the free-throw line, converting 14 of 15 free-throws. The Trojans were 12-for-17 from the free-throw line.
Dakota State committed 21 turnovers – 16 in the first-half. The Tigers had 16 turnovers in the game.
DSU takes on NCAA Division II Northern State in an exhibition game on Friday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen, S.D. The Trojans return back to regular-season action on Saturday evening as they face Trinity Bible College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse in Ellendale, N.D.
