Trojans kick off Hampton Inn Classic with 79-69 win over York (Neb.)

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Dakota State kicked off the Hampton Inn Classic, hosted by Bellevue University, with a 79-69 win over York (Neb.) Friday evening at Gordon Lozier Center.
The win improved DSU's overall record to 5-3. York, a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC), dropped to 5-4.
For the second straight game, the Trojans started the game fast by scoring eight straight points in the first two minutes and 15 seconds of the game (DSU started the game with an 11-0 run in an exhibition loss to Augustana on Nov. 22).
The Panthers answered back with eight straight points to tie the game at 8-8 with less than 15 minutes left before halftime.
Dakota State used a 19-8 run to break an 8-8 tie into a 27-16 lead with 6:21 left before intermission. DSU grabbed an eleven-point halftime lead (40-27).
The Trojans maintained control in the second-half as they led between ten- and eighteen-points. DSU had the largest lead of the game at 74-56 with 2:50 left in regulation.
York outscored DSU 40-39 in the second-half.
Five players scored in double digits for the Trojans. Jordan Snyder scored 14 p0ints off the bench. He shot 5-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-4 from the 3-point arc. Snyder added six rebounds. Cameron Krump had 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Spencer Adams and Keith Biggers each had 11 points. Jesse Bean poured in 10 points and dished out four assists.
Desmond Strickland had 17 points for the Panthers. He was 6-for-13 from the field and 5-for-10 from the 3-point line. Dylan Brewer added 10 points off the bench. Thaddeus Varmall had eight points, six rebounds and four assists.
DSU shot 49.1 percent from the field (28-for-57) compared to York 41.2 percent (28-for-68). The Trojans were 6-for-21 from the 3-point line, while the Panthers made seven 3-pointers in 22 attempts.
Dakota State went to the free-throw line 21 times, converting 16 free-throws. York was 6-for-10 from the free-throw line.
The Trojans committed 21 turnovers in the game compared to York 16.
DSU outrebounded the Panthers 47-31.
Dakota State continues their action in the second day of the Hampton Inn Classic Saturday evening. The Trojans face the second team from the MCAC, the host-team Bellevue. Bellevue is ranked No. 4 in the NAIA Men's Basketball Division II preseason national poll. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Gordon Lozier Center.
