Vikings defeat Trojans in DSU’s women’s basketball exhibition game

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Augustana held Dakota State to below 25 percent shooting from the field as the Vikings earned a 75-37 win Tuesday night at Elmen Center. It was an exhibition game for the Trojans.
Dakota State's overall record remains at 2-5. Augustana completed their non-conference schedule with a 3-1 record. The Vikings will start their conference play this weekend.
DSU opened with a 2-0 lead by Katy Pillar's basket with eighteen minutes and seven seconds left in the first-half.
The Trojans held the Vikings scoreless for the first 2:34 of the game. AC broke their scoring drought with a free-throw made by Andrea Whitney. AC did not record their first field goal until 15:32 mark on the clock in the first-half for a 3-2 lead.
Dakota State was held to one field goal in the final 10:24 of the first-half. The Vikings closed the first-half with a 22-6 run to grab a 33-16 halftime lead.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first-half. The Vikings shot 33.3 percent (13-for-39) from the field, while DSU was 5-for-27 from the field (18.5 percent)
The Trojans could get no closer than twelve points (35-23) with 15:22 left in regulation.
Augustana outscored DSU 42-27 in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Pillar had a double-double of 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Trojans. She had three steals. Kylie Westover added seven points. Jayda Swenson had a game-high 12 rebounds. Julie Munson dished out four assists.
Alex Feeney scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Vikings. Shaunteva Ashley added 17 points off the bench. She dished out six assists. Emily Schulte recorded 10 points and stole the ball seven times.
Feeney and Whitney each had three blocked shots for AC.
Augustana shot 40.3 percent overall from the field (29-for-72) compared to the Trojans' 21.1 percent (12-for-57).
The Vikings outrebounded DSU 50-42.
The Trojans committed 25 turnovers in the game compared to AC 16.
Augustana outscored DSU 40-4 inside the paint and 25-2 in fast-break points.
Dakota State returns back to regular-season action on Saturday night. The Trojans face their former Dakota Athletic Conference rival Mayville State for both teams' second meeting this season (the Comets won the first meeting 87-62 in Mayville, N.D. on Nov. 5). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
