DSU displays stellar performances in season-opening indoor track and field meet

WOMEN'S RESULTS - MEN'S RESULTS
WAYNE, Neb. – Dakota State kicked off their 2011-12 indoor track and field season Saturday at WSC Recreation Center. The Trojans crowned three individual titles at the Wildcat Preseason Open, hosted by Wayne State College.
The Trojans dominated the men's one-mile run event led by senior Matt Fideler. He captured the title with a time of four minutes and 24.76 seconds, which is one second short of provisional national qualifying standard mark. Michael Hoffman was third in 4:41.27. Nic Penning placed fifth in 4:42.54; John Bintliff was 6th in 4:49.10 and Jim Wynia placed ninth in 5:45.17.
Wynia was second in the men's 3000-meter run (12:32.52).
Summer Bronson won the women's 60-meter hurdles. She clocked a time of 10.11 seconds in the preliminaries and recorded a 10.14 seconds finish in the finals.
In the women's 400-meter dash, Stephanie Uher grabbed a first-place finish with a time of 1:03.70. Nicole Jurrens was second in 1:08.11.
Ryan Gimbel set a new DSU school record in men's weight throw.
He recorded a throw measurement of 43 feet and three inches (previous old school record mark was set by Chase Calkins in 2007 – 42 feet and 5.25 inches) for a third-place finish. Trevor Rossknecht was fifth with a measurement of 37 feet and 8.75 inches.
Gimbel was fourth in the men's shot put (41 feet and 10 inches).
Stacey Berg recorded a second-place finish in the men's 60-meter dash. He recorded a 7.28 seconds in the preliminaries and 7.29 in the finals. Berg also placed fourth in the men's long jump with a measurement of 21 feet and 2.5 inches.
In the 800-meter run, Andy Quenzer was second in the men's (2:05.40).
Amber Wiebenga finished second in the women's 1000-meter run with a time of 3:43.19. Sara Schultz was third in 3:46.86.
Ike Pohlman placed third in the men's 400-meter dash (58 seconds).
In the men's 600-meter dash, Gabe Samuelson finished second with a time of 1:31.39. Cordell Muilenburg was third (1:32.25), followed by Joshua Scott who finished fourth (1:39.05).
Muilenburg was sixth in the men's 200-meter dash (26 seconds).
DSU women's and men's 4 x 400-meter relay teams finished second. The women's recorded a time of 4:29.53, while the men's finished in 3:43.57.
Shannon Spurgin was sixth in the women's long jump (14 feet and 10.75 inches).
Dakota State will take a month off before returning back to action. The Trojans will return back after their winter break as they compete in the Dordt College Open on January 14, 2012. The meet will be held in Sioux Center, Iowa.
