Hot-shooting in second-half give Trojans 68-57 win over Mayville State

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State men's basketball team shot a sizzling 73.9 percent from the field (17-for-23) in the second-half to give the Trojans a 68-57 win over Mayville State Saturday night at DSU Fieldhouse. DSU swept the season series with their former Dakota Athletic Conference rival (DSU defeated 81-61 in Mayville, N.D. on Nov. 5).
Dakota State raised their overall record to 7-4. The Comets dropped to 7-5.
After Mayville State recorded their first lead of the game from Gus Kueber's jumper, DSU converted 4-of-5 field goals to grab a 9-2 lead with sixteen minutes and 39 seconds left in the first-half.
The Comets answered back and regained their lead at 10-9 with 13:34 on the clock in the first-half.
Both teams exchanged lead or tied the game in the next two minutes. At 13-13, the Trojans used a 9-1 scoring tear to grab a 21-14 lead with 7:42 left before halftime.
Mayville State drained six 3-pointers in the first-half as they grabbed a 30-27 halftime lead. DSU was 2-for-12 from the 3-point arc in the first twenty minutes of the game.
With the game tied at 43-43 with 12:42 remaining in regulation, the Trojans scored eight consecutive points to gain a 51-43 lead with 8:38 left in the game.
DSU maintained control through the rest of the second-half. The Comets could get no closer than four points in two occasions (53-49 and 55-51).
The Trojans secured the victory with a 13-6 run in the final 5:06.
Dakota State outscored Mayville State 41-27 in the last twenty minutes of the game.
Spencer Adams scored 19 points off the bench and pulled down seven rebounds for DSU. He was 9-for-14 from the field. Luke Lamb added 17 points on his 7-for-11 shooting from the field. He dished out four assists. Yusef Gray scored 13 points. Jesse Bean had seven points and recorded six assists.
Kueber had 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Comets. He was 7-for-19 from the field. Eric Shulstad recorded five 3-pointers for 15 points. Matt Bauduin had six points and dished out five assists.
DSU shot 56 percent overall from the field (28-for-50) compared to the Comets' 36.5 percent (19-for-52). The Comets made nine 3-pointers in 28 attempts (32.1 percent), while the Trojans made three 3-pointers in 15 attempts (20 percent).
Dakota State had three more rebounds than the Comets (33-30).
The Trojans outscored the Comets 32-8 inside the paint. DSU had 27 bench points compared to the Comets' eight.
Dakota State takes a week off before returning back to action. The Trojans step aside of the regular-season play on Monday, Dec. 12. DSU will play NCAA Division I South Dakota State in an exhibition game, starting at 7 p.m.
