Trojan women's basketball plays a pair of games on the road this week

THIS WEEK: Dakota State (3-5 overall record) heads on the road this week for a pair of games. The Trojans head to the Corn Palace Monday (tonight) to face their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan (5-3) for both teams' second meeting of the season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. On Friday night, DSU travels to the Lied Fitness Center in Omaha, Neb. to face a nationally-ranked team Saint Mary (Neb.) (10-3). The starting game time is set for 7 p.m.
LAST MEETING: Dakota Wesleyan used the first-half spurt to defeat Dakota State 76-65 in both teams' first meeting on Nov. 15 at DSU Fieldhouse. With the score tied at 17-17 with ten minutes and 33 seconds before halftime, the Tigers used a 16-0 run to break the tie into a 33-17 lead nearly four minutes left in the first-half. DWU held a 35-27 halftime lead. The Trojans could get no closer than six points in the second-half (46-40) with 11:23 remaining in the game. Julie Munson had 23 points in the game. She recorded eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Kylie Westover had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cassie Jacobsen added 13 points and earned six rebounds. Amanda Hart scored 19 points for DWU. Whitnee Clayton added 13 points off the bench. Brittany Hills had 10 points. The last time DSU faced Saint Mary, a member of Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, was on Dec. 2, 2006 in Omaha, Neb. Both teams struggled from the field, shooting well below 30 percent. The Trojans grabbed a slim 18-16 lead at halftime. The Flames outscored DSU 34-15 in the second-half to defeat the Trojans 50-33. DSU was 22 percent from the field, while Saint Marty shot 29.5 percent.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State lost its exhibition game against NCAA Division II Augustana (S.D.) on Nov. 25. The Vikings held the Trojans to below 25 percent shooting from the field as AC earned a 75-37 win. DSU bounced back in the winning column on Dec. 3 as they defeated their former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Mayville State 67-60 in overtime thriller. The Trojans went 3-for-4 from the field in overtime, while the Comets missed its seven shots. Dakota Wesleyan, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, split a pair of road games last week. The Tigers defeated Dordt (Iowa) 63-56 on Nov. 30, but fell short to No. 5 Hastings (Neb.) 64-59 on Dec. 3. Saint Mary, No. 21 in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball national poll as of Nov. 28, defeated William Penn (Iowa) 69-66 in their lone game of the week on Nov. 29.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Two Dakota State players scored in double-double in 67-60 overtime win over Mayville State. Katy Pillar had 17 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Kylie Westover recorded her second double-double of the season on Dec. 3 where she had 17 points and earned 12 defensive rebounds. Pillar had a double-double in Trojans'
exhibition loss to Augustana on Nov. 29. She had 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Monday, Dec. 5, Dakota State ranks 21st in the nation in total rebounds per game (43.8), 23rd in 3-point field goal defense (27.2 percent), 24th in total rebounds margin (+6.0) and offensive rebounds per game (15.3), 29th in defensive rebounds per game (28.5) and 35th in assists per game (14.0).
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Julie Munson leads the Trojans in scoring with an average of 11.6 points per game. She scored in double digits in the last five regular-season contests.
Munson amasses 16 steals (2.3 average) this season. Courtney Hamblin averages 6.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 0.3 blocks per game for DSU.

UP NEXT: Dakota State returns home for a brief two-game home stand at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans host University of Minnesota-Morris on Dec. 16 with a 7 p.m. starting time. DSU will host AIB (Iowa) after Christmas on Dec. 30. The women's game starts at 5:30 p.m.
