DSU women's basketball team returns back to action Friday, heads to North Dakota next week

THIS WEEK: Playing their first game since Dec. 16, Dakota State (4-7 overall record) faces AIB (Iowa) (7-7) Friday night at DSU Fieldhouse for the final game of 2011 at 5:30 p.m. The Trojans will start their 2012 schedule as they head to North Dakota next Tuesday and Wednesday. DSU visits their former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foe Jamestown (13-2, No. 15 in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball national poll) on Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. The game will be held at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D. On Jan. 4, the Trojans head to the Bison Sports Arena in Fargo, N.D. for an exhibition game with North Dakota State (2-11). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
LAST MEETING: AIB (Iowa), a member of the Midwest Collegiate Conference, won the inaugural meeting with Dakota State on Jan. 29, 2011 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Eagles defeated the Trojans 66-61. DSU outrebounded AIB 50-39, but the Trojans committed 35 turnovers in the game compared to the Eagles' 20. Jamestown won the last six meetings from the Trojans. The last time Trojans defeated the Jimmies was on Jan. 10, 2009 as DSU recorded a 70-68 upset over Jamestown (JC was ranked fourth in the NAIA national poll). The Jimmies won the last four meetings from DSU at the Civic Center. The Trojans' last win in Jamestown was on Jan. 26, 2008 as DSU recorded a 64-57 victory over JC. Dakota State will meet North Dakota State, a member of the Summit League and NCAA Division I for the first time as this game will not count toward to DSU's regular season record.
LAST TIME OUT: DSU defeated Minnesota-Morris 61-58 on Dec. 16 at DSU Fieldhouse. DSU's Kylie Westover blocked a potential tying 3-point shot from the Cougars. AIB held on to defeat Central College 53-50 on Dec. 17 in Des Moines, Iowa. Jamestown suffered their second defeat on Dec. 19 with a 96-74 loss at Minot State. The Jimmies will play two nationally ranked teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (No. 5 Morningside on Dec. 29 and No. 3 Briar Cliff on Dec. 30) in the Briar Cliff Holiday Classic in Sioux City, Iowa prior to hosting DSU on Jan. 3. North Dakota State is currently on a seven-game losing streak. The Bison lost all three games at the BTI Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. from Dec. 18-20 (lost to Kansas State 70-47, UNLV 76-57 and Northwestern 68-55). NDSU returns back to the Summit League action as they host IPFW on Dec. 29 and Oakland on Dec. 31.
HOME COOKING: The Trojans look to finish the month of December undefeated at DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State is currently 3-2 at home (2-0 in December) with the most recent win over Minnesota-Morris (61-58) on Dec. 16. The Trojans also defeated Grace (Neb.) on Nov. 1 (83-36) and Mayville State on Dec. 3 (67-60 in overtime). DSU suffered defeats from York (Neb.) on Nov. 11 (60-53) and in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan on Nov. 15 (76-65).
TROJANS RANK NATIONALLY: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Dec. 27, Dakota State ranks 29th in the nation in total rebound margin (+3.7), 42nd in defensive rebounds per game (27.5), 44th in total rebounds per game (40.6) and 49th in 3-point field goal percentage defense (29.4). Kylie Westover ranks 50th in the nation in 3-point field goal made per game (2.0).
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Trojans in scoring with an average of 11.8 points per game. Jayda Swenson records 70 rebounds (6.4 average) this season. Courtney Hamblin averages 2.6 assists (29 total) and 1.2 steals (13 total) for DSU.
