Valley City State defeats Trojan women’s basketball 68-52

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University women's basketball team played its fourth game in six days Sunday evening. The Trojans hosted their former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Valley City State at DSU Fieldhouse. VCSU outscored DSU 38-18 inside the paint to defeat Trojans 68-52.
Dakota State suffered their third straight regular-season defeat and dropped their overall record to 5-10. Valley City State improved their record to 12-8.
The Vikings shot 7-for-11 from the field to gain a 16-4 advantage in the first eight minutes and eleven seconds of the game. The Trojans were 1-for-14 during that stretch.
Valley City State held a 31-21 halftime lead. The Vikings shot 44.4 percent (12-for-27) from the field, while the Trojans were 21.4 percent from the field (6-for-23).
The Trojans could get no closer than eight points (32-24 with 19:14 remaining) in the second-half. VCSU maintained control in the final twenty minutes of the game.
The Vikings had the largest lead of the game at 68-45 with 5:36 left in the game.
Courtney Hamblin led the Trojans with 13 points. She had four rebounds. Jayda Swenson added 10 points off the bench and pulled down seven rebounds. Kylie Westover had nine points. Katy Pillar scored eight points and earned eight rebounds. Yui Onodera dished out four assists.
For VCSU, Katelyn Ralston had 15 points and dished out five assists. Brittany Lehner and Courtney Titus each added 11 points. Sadiqah Jihad had five assists. Lehner grabbed six rebounds. Sierra Even and Allison Scherr each had two blocked shots.
The Vikings shot 48.3 percent overall from the field (29-for-60) compared to the Trojans' 30.9 percent (17-for-55). VCSU had 21 assists compared to the Trojans' 11.
Both teams had four 3-poitners in the game.
DSU was 14-for-23 from the free-throw line (60.9 percent), while the Vikings converted 6-of-9 free-throws (66.7 percent).
The Trojans outrebounded Valley City State 43-33. The Trojans had 17 offensive rebounds compared to the Vikings' seven. DSU had a slim 9-8 advantage in second-chance points.
Dakota State returns back to the road on Wednesday night. The Trojans head to the DeWitt Gymnasium to visit Dordt (Iowa). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
