DSU qualifies two athletes for NAIA Indoor Track and Field Nationals

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Dakota State University indoor track and field teams returned back to action Saturday after a month-long break. The Trojans competed in the Dordt Invitational Open at DC's Recreation Center. DSU qualified two student-athletes (Matt Fideler and Andy Coy) for 2012 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Nationals.
Fideler (Volga, S.D.) qualified for nationals as he captured the men's 3000-meter run with a time of eight minutes and 44.54 seconds. Fideler will be making his third nationals appearance this coming March in Geneva, Ohio. Nic Penning was third with a time of 9:14.65. Michael Hoffman placed fourth in 9:25.66.
Penning was third in the men's one-mile run with a time of 4:44.81.
In the men's 1000-meter run, Coy (Hill City, S.D.) ran a time of 2:31.11 for a second-place finish. He qualified to the indoor track nationals for his third straight year at DSU.
Stacey Berg placed fourth in the men's long jump. He leaped a measurement of 20 feet and 11.25 inches. Berg finished sixth in the 200-meter dash in 23.92 seconds and 10th in 55-meter dash (6.73 seconds).
Ryan Gimbel continues to improve his personal best in men's weight throw. He broke a new DSU school record with a throw measurement of 44 feet and 1.5 inches for a fifth-place finish. Gimbel was eighth in men's shot put (39 feet and 4.5 inches).
Summer Bronson clocked a time of 9.52 seconds for a fifth-place finish in the women's 55-meter hurdles. She was 18th in the 200-meter dash (29.41 seconds).
Brittany Pearson placed sixth in the women's weight throw with a measurement of 36 feet and nine inches.
In the women's 400-meter dash, Stephanie Uher placed eighth with a time of 1:02.71. She was 19th in the 55-meter dash (8.11 seconds).
Amber Wiebenga was eighth in the women's 600-meter run in 2:11.38. Sara Schultz placed 9th in 2:13.06.
In the women's 1000-meter run, Schultz finished 8th in 3:50.37. Wiebenga was ninth with a time of 3:51.80.
Andrew Gross cleared a pole vault height measurement of 12 feet and seven inches for a ninth-place finish.
Other place finishers are: Nicole Jurrens (27th in 200-meter dash – 31.31 seconds; 20th in 400-meter dash – 1:11.56); Claire Beck (17th in 400-meter dash – 1:05.86); Shannon Spurgin (10th in long jump 15 feet and 1.5 inches); Shayna Dwyer (11th in shot put – 31 feet and .5 inches); Gabe Samuelson (13th in 800-meter run – 2:07.45); Cordell Muilenburg (14th in 800-meter run – 2:08.37); John Bintliff (23rd in one-mile run – 5:03.81) and Trevor Rossknecht – 12th in weight throw – 35' 5.25".
Dakota State will take partial team members to the Iowa State Open on Jan. 20 and 21 in Ames, Iowa. The Trojans will be taking the majority team members to the Wildcat Open on Saturday, Jan. 21. The meet will be held in WSC's Recreation Center in Wayne, Neb.
