DSU women's basketball looks to end losing skid with three games this week

THIS WEEK: Dakota State (5-12 overall record) looks to snap their five-game losing skid as they face three NCAA Division II teams from South Dakota this week. The Trojans face their in-state rival University of Sioux Falls (10-2) on Tuesday night. Tip-off from the Stewart Center is set for 6 p.m. DSU returns home this weekend to host their former Dakota Athletic Conference members. The Trojans welcome Black Hills State (4-9) on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday afternoon, DSU entertains South Dakota Mines (8-7) with a 4 p.m. game time start. Both games will be at DSU Fieldhouse.
TELEVISION: Midco Sports Network will carry a live broadcast of Dakota State-University of Sioux Falls women's basketball game from the Stewart Center on Tuesday night. Midco Sports Network can be found on channel 26 or 622 for Midcontinent Communication subscribers.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State swept a season series with University of Sioux Falls in both teams' last meeting. The Trojans defeated the Cougars 70-64 in overtime on Dec. 30, 2009 as part of USF classic at the Stewart Center. DSU beat USF in Trojans' 2009 season home opener on Nov. 9, 2009 at DSU Fieldhouse by the score of 67-48. Black Hills State had won the last nine games (including postseason) in the series with DSU. The last time the Trojans defeated the Yellow Jackets was on Jan. 18, 2008 by the score of 72-64 (the year when Dakota State went on to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament 'Sweet Sixteen'). The most recent game was on Feb. 23, 2011 in Spearfish, S.D. when BSHU held on to defeat the Trojans 71-62 in the DAC Postseason
Quarterfinals Tournament. Dakota State split a season series with South Dakota Mines last season with each team winning on its home court. The Trojans beat the Hardrockers 66-59 on Jan. 14, 2011 at DSU Fieldhouse. SD Mines won the second meeting 78-58 in Rapid City, S.D. on Feb. 12, 2011.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State fell on the road to Dordt (Iowa) on Jan. 11 in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Lady Defenders escaped with a 68-52 victory over the Trojans. On Jan. 14, DSU overcame a slow start and held on to a slim two-point halftime lead (31-29) over No. 13 Jamestown (N.D.). The Jimmies shot 54.2 percent from the field and converted 12-of-17 free-throws in the second-half to defeat the Trojans 71-59. University of Sioux Falls suffered a 74-61 defeat to NCAA Division I University of Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 15. Black Hills State earned a weekend split in North Dakota on Jan. 13 and 14. The Yellow Jackets held on to beat Dickinson State 60-57 on Jan. 13 before falling to Minot State 83-47 on Jan. 14. South Dakota Mines lost to Minot State 70-67 on Jan. 13 and defeated Dickinson State 74-68 on Jan. 14 to gain a weekend split in North Dakota.
GOING FOR CAREER WIN NO. 100: Dakota State University head women's basketball coach is going for his 100th career win this week. He is currently one win away to accomplishment this milestone.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Jan. 16, Dakota State ranks 29th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage defense (27.6 percent). The Trojans are 35th in the nation in total rebounds margin (+2.6), 37th in defensive rebounds per game (27.4), 45th in total rebounds per game (40.4) and 47th in free-throw percentage (69.4).
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Trojans in scoring with an average of 11.5 points per game. She leads the team with four blocked shots (0.2 blocks per game). Jayda Swenson records 116 rebounds (6.8 average) this season. She ranks 34th in the nation in free-throw percentage (81.1). Courtney Hamblin averages 2.5 assists per game (42 total). Julie Munson leads the team in steals with 25 (1.8 per game).
