USF tops Trojans in women’s basketball action Tuesday night

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dakota State built a nine-point lead midway through the first-half at NCAA Division II University of Sioux Falls Tuesday night at the Stewart Center. The Cougars answered back with and escaped DSU with a 74-46 win.
Dakota State dropped their sixth straight game and dipped their overall record to 5-13. USF, their first year transition to NCAA Division II, improved their record to 11-2.
USF jumped to a 5-4 lead through the first four minutes of the game. The Trojans went to score ten straight points to grab a 14-5 lead 12:13 remaining in the first-half.
The Cougars answered back with a 24-5 run to take a 29-19 lead with four minutes left before intermission.
Dakota State limited USF to two points in the final four minutes of the first-half as the Trojans trimmed their deficit to 31-25.
USF shot 40.6 percent from the field (13-for-32) in the first twenty minutes of the game, including a 5-for-17 from the 3-point line (29.4 percent). DSU was 8-for-26 from the field (30.8 percent).
USF began the second-half with a 12-0 run and maintained control for the rest of the game.
The Cougars outscored the Trojans 43-21 in the second-half.
Julie Munson scored 12 points for DSU. She dished out two assists and stole the ball four times. Courtney Hamblin added nine points and grabbed six rebounds. Kylie Westover and Katy Pillar each added eight points.
For USF, Bailey Bouman had a game-high 17 points off the bench. She was 6-for-9 from the field and drained five 3-pointers in seven attempts. Alyssa Rushton added 12 points. Holli Aggen scored seven points and dished out four assists. Maggie Malloy had eight rebounds.
The Cougars shot 45.5 percent overall from the field (30-for-66) compared to the Trojans' 37 percent (17-for-46). USF had 10 3-pointers in 33 attempts (30.3 percent), while DSU was 3-for-13 from the 3-point line.
USF have a slim rebounding advantage over the Trojans, 34-31.
DSU committed 25 turnovers in the game (15 in the second-half), while USF had 13 turnovers.
Dakota State looks to end their losing streak this weekend as they return home at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans welcome their former Dakota Athletic Conference foes, starting with Black Hills State on Friday night. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
