Trojan indoor track and field competes in two meets this weekend

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University indoor track and field teams will take partial members to the Iowa State Open this weekend in Ames, Iowa. The majority of DSU's teams travel to Wayne, Neb. to compete in the Wildcat Open on Saturday.
IOWA STATE OPEN: DSU will be taking four distance runners to the Iowa State Open this weekend – Andy Coy, Matt Fideler, Michael Hoffman and Nic Penning. The event takes place in the Lied Recreational Center and features numerous quality schools from all levels. Coy and Fideler will be running the one-mile run, while Hoffman and Penning will run in the 5000-meters race. These four DSU runners are attempting to record the NAIA's national qualifying standard.
WILDCAT OPEN: The Wildcat Open is hosted by NCAA Division II Wayne State. The meet will be held at WSC's Recreation Center in Wayne, Neb. The first event takes place at 10 a.m. with weight throw, long jump, high jump and pole vault. Running events start at 1 p.m. with the women's and men's 60-meter hurdles. Teams expected in the event besides DSU and host-team Wayne State are Briar Cliff, Buena Vista, Iowa Western, Morningside, Mount Marty and York (Neb.)
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State returned back to action after a month-long break on Jan. 14 at the Dordt College Open. Matt Fideler captured the men's 3000-meter run title with a time of eight minutes and 44.54 seconds in the 21-runner field. Nic Penning earned a third-place finish in 9:14.65, followed by Michael Hoffman with a time of 9:25.66. Penning placed third in the men's one-mile run in 4:44.81. Andy Coy crossed the finish line in second place in the men's 1000-meter run (2:31.11). Stacey Berg was fourth in the men's long jump (20 feet and 11.25 inches). Ryan Gimbel continued to improve his career and school-record in the men's weight throw. He threw a measurement of 44 feet and 1.5 inches for a fifth-place finish. In the women's 55-meter hurdles, Summer Bronson recorded a fifth-place finish in 9.52 seconds. Brittany Pearson was sixth in the women's weight throw (36 feet and nine inches). Stephanie Uher was eighth in the women's 400-meter dash in 1:02.71. Amber Wiebenga placed eighth in the 600-meter run (2:11.38), while Sara Schultz was eighth in the 1000-meter run (3:50.37).
NATIONAL QUALIFIER: Matt Fideler and Andy Coy will be making their third appearance to the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in early March. Fideler qualified for the men's 3000-meter run, while Coy qualified for the men's 1000-meter run. The NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships will be held in Geneva, Ohio on March 3-5.
FIDELER NAMED A.I.I. MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: The Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) has selected DSU's Matt Fideler as its Male Athlete of the Week, announced on Jan. 16. Fideler won the men's 3000-meter event at the Dordt College Open on Jan. 14 with a time of 8:44.45, nearly 20 seconds ahead of his closest competitor.
COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his first year as an assistant coach in track and field. Al Weisbecker joins the coaching staff as an assistant coach as a thrower's coach. Cody Foreman is a student assistant track and field coach.
UP NEXT: Dakota State heads to Storm Lake, Iowa on Jan. 28 to participate in the Dennis Young Classic. The event is hosted by Buena Vista University.
