DSU’s strong bench scoring and rebounding fuel to victory over South Dakota Mines

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State men's basketball team outscored South Dakota Mines 44-19 in bench points Saturday night as the Trojans recorded their second win over NCAA Division II member at DSU Fieldhouse. In addition, the Trojans outrebounded the Hardrockers 45-18 in the game for a 85-69 DSU victory.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 12-9 after the victory and 2-1 versus NCAA Division II opponents this week (lost at University of Sioux Falls on Jan. 17). The Trojans are 2-0 in the current five-game home stand at DSU Fieldhouse. South Dakota Mines dropped back to .500 with a record of 9-9.
It was the first time since 2005 (Jan. 28-29) that Dakota State had swept two Black Hills teams on the same weekend (DSU defeated BHSU 79-70 last Friday night).
DSU and SDM went through five ties and four lead changes in the first eight minutes and 40 seconds of the game.
With DSU leading at 22-20 with 7:17 left before halftime, the Trojans went on a 13-4 surge in a span of four-and-half minutes for a 35-24 lead.
Dakota State maintained a ten-point halftime lead at 39-29.
The Trojans kept control of the lead for the rest of the game. The Hardrockers could get no closer than nine points at 43-34 with 17:34 remaining in the game.
DSU had their largest lead of the game at 85-67 with 1:20 left in the game.
Keith Biggers had a double-double of 21 points and pulled down 18 rebounds (four rebounds short of tying DSU school record for most rebounds in a single game in DSU's school record book) for the Trojans. He had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the first-half. Yusef Gray added 16 points off the bench and dished out four assists. He was 5-for-6 from the field and converted all six free-throw attempts. Jesse Bean added 13 points. Luke Lamb scored 11 points, recorded five assists and three steals. He had three blocked shots and earned four rebounds. Donald Stewart had four assists.
Kyle Doerr and Tanner Friesen each had 14 points for the Hardrockers. Nathan Jacobsen had 12 points, five assists and three steals. Caleb Shockman had 11 points off the bench. Doerr had six assists. Friesen earned five boards.
DSU shot 53.2 percent from the field (33-for-62) compared to SDM 50 percent (26-for-52).
The Trojans had 20 offensive boards, while the Hardrockers had five offensive rebounds. DSU outscored SDM 18-6 in second-chance points.
DSU outscored South Dakota Mines 46-32 inside the paint.
Dakota State looks to remain undefeated in their current five-game home stand as they host Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Friday, Jan. 27. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., or 25 minutes after the completion of the women's game at DSU Fieldhouse.
