DSU indoor track and field teams head to Storm Lake Saturday

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University indoor track and field teams continue their busy 2012 schedule as they travel to Storm Lake, Iowa on Saturday. The Trojans compete in the Dennis Young Classic.
DENNIS YOUNG CLASSIC: NCAA Division III Buena Vista University hosts its annual Dennis Young Classic, held at the Lamberti Recreation Center/Dennis Young Track. The field events kick off at 9 a.m. with the weight throw, long jump, high jump and pole vault. The first running events are expected to start at 10 a.m. with the women's and men's distance medley relay.
LAST TIME OUT: Stephanie Uher claimed the women's 600-meter run title at the Wildcat Open on Jan. 21. She ran her first-ever 600-meter run with a time of one minute and 44.61 seconds. Uher placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in 28.46 seconds. Claire Beck was runner-up in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.79. Stacey Berg competed in three different men's events at the Wildcat Open. He placed third in the high jump with a leap measurement of five feet and ten inches. Berg ran a time of 7.28 seconds for a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash. He was 12th in the long jump (20 feet and 4.25 inches). In the men's pole vault, Andrew Gross recorded a third-place finish a measurement of 12 feet and two inches.
NATIONAL QUALIFIER: Matt Fideler and Andy Coy each had added another event for NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Fideler and Coy each qualified to national in the men's one-mile run after competing in the Iowa State Open on Jan. 21. Coy recorded a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:17.03, while Fideler was fifth in 4:18.79. Currently, Coy have qualified for the men's 1000-meter run and one-mile run for nationals. Fideler qualified for the men's 3000-meter run and one-mile run for NAIA nationals. The national meet will be held in Geneva, Ohio on March 3-5.
COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his first year as an assistant coach in track and field. Al Weisbecker joins the coaching staff as an assistant coach as a thrower's coach. Cody Foreman is a student assistant track and field coach.
UP NEXT: Dakota State competes in two different meets next weekend. The Trojans will be taking partial team members to the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. on Feb. 3-4. The majority of the DSU's indoor track and field teams will travel to Sioux Center, Iowa to compete in the Dordt Invitational on Feb. 4.
