DSU men’s basketball team earns fourth straight win, defeat Lancers 67-49

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State men's basketball team started the second-half with a strong start to defeat their in-state rival Mount Marty 67-49 Tuesday night at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans held the Lancers' starters to 13 points in the game as DSU won their fourth straight game (all at home).
DSU raised their overall record to 14-9 and remained undefeated in their current five-game home stand (4-0). The Trojans improved their home record to 8-5 and defeated MMC for the fourth straight time in the series. Mount Marty dropped their record to 10-13.
There were six ties and four lead changes in the first thirteen minutes of the game.
With DSU leading at 25-24 with 3:22 remaining before intermission, DSU's Donald Stewart scored the final six points of the first-half to give Trojans a 31-24 halftime advantage.
Dakota State used a 31-11 scoring surge in the first 13:06 of the second-half to grab their biggest lead of the game at 62-32 to seal the victory.
Jesse Bean finished with 14 points for the Trojans. He was 4-for-8 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Spencer Adams and Stewart each added 13 points. Cameron Krump had six points and six rebounds off the bench. Yusef Gray, Jordan Snyder and Krump each recorded three steals. Gray dished out four assists.
For Mount Marty, Joe Hieb scored 12 points off the bench. Jeff Viereck recorded a double-double of 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. He had three blocked shots. Will Eddie dished out three assists.
Mount Marty shot better in the game, shooting 47.6 percent (20-for-42) compared to the Trojans' 43.6 percent (24-for-55). DSU went 6-for-16 behind the 3-point line, while MMC was 1-for-6 from the 3-point arc.
Dakota State went to the free-throw line 20 times and converted 13 free-throws (65 percent). Mount Marty was 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Lancers committed 26 turnovers in the game compared to the Trojans' 16. DSU outscored MMC 23-17 in points off turnovers. The Trojans recorded 15 steals in the game, while the Lancers had seven steals.
MMC's bench outscored DSU 36-16.
Mount Marty outrebounded the Trojans 33-27.
Dakota State looks to finish their current five-game home stand undefeated on Saturday night. The Trojans host their in-state rival University of Sioux Falls at DSU Fieldhouse (USF won the first meeting from DSU 83-57 at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls on Jan. 17). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., or 25 minutes after the completion of the women's game.
