Trojans compete in two different indoor track and field meets this weekend

THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University indoor track and field teams will be competing in two different meets this weekend. The Trojans will be sending three athletes to the 37th Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska, on Friday and Saturday. The meet will be held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. DSU will be sending the majority of the team to the Dordt Invitational at the DC's Recreation Center in Sioux Center, Iowa.
FRANK SEVIGNE HUSKER INVITATIONAL: Dakota State will be sending Matt Fideler, Andy Coy and Stephanie Uher to the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational this weekend. The meet will feature numerous schools from NCAA and NAIA levels. Fideler and Coy will be racing in the men's one-mile run at 12:15 p.m. Uher will run in the women's 600-meter race, which is slated to start at approximately 12:48 p.m.
DORDT INVITATIONAL: The majority of DSU indoor track and field teams will be participating in the Dordt Invitational for the second time within a month (the Trojans competed in the Dordt College Open on Jan. 14). The Trojans are looking to build-on their great performances from last weekend's meet (Dennis Young Classic) at Buena Vista University. "It is the time of the year to really start running fast, as we go into our last three regular season meets," stated head coach Buzz Stevenson. The field events start at 9:45 a.m. with the long jump, pole vault, weight throw and high jump. The running events are slated to start at 10:30 a.m. with the 4 x 800-meter relays.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State competed in the Dennis Young Classic on Jan. 28, hosted by Buena Vista University. The Trojans dominated the 1000-meter run led by Fideler. He captured the race with a time of two minutes and 30.21 seconds and qualified for NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Michael Hoffman was seventh in 2:40.13. Coy recorded a national qualifying time of 1:22.63 for a second-place finish in the men's 600-meter race. Uher ran in her first-ever 800-meter run and earned a third-place finish with a time of 2:25.86. Summer Bronson placed fourth in the women's 55-meter hurdles in 9.35 seconds. Stacey Berg recorded seventh-place finish in three different men's events – 21 feet and 6.75 inches in the long jump, 6.76 seconds in the 55-meter dash and 23.73 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Ryan Gimbel threw a measurement of 42 feet and 10.25 for a fourth-place finish in the men's weight throw.
THIRD TIME A CHARM: Matt Fideler and Andy Coy each had made their third different national qualifying event on Jan. 28 from the Dennis Young Classic. They will be making their third national appearance to the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships, which will be held in Geneva, Ohio on March 3-5. Fideler had qualified for the nationals in the one-mile, 3000-meter and 1000-meter runs. Coy had made a national qualifying times in the one-mile, 600-meter and 1000-meter runs.
COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his first year as an assistant coach in track and field. Al Weisbecker joins the coaching staff as an assistant coach as a thrower's coach. Cody Foreman is a student assistant track and field coach.
UP NEXT: Dakota State heads to Storm Lake, Iowa for the second time in two weeks as they compete in the Buena Vista/Graphic Edge Invitational.
