DSU defeats Midland 83-68 in home women’s basketball regular-season finale

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State drained 12 3-pointers in the game and shot a sizzling 66.7 percent in the second-half to defeat Midland 83-68 Saturday evening in women's basketball action at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans recorded their first win against the Great Plains Athletic conference member this season. It was the annual 'Think Pink' game to help raise cancer awareness and DSU's regular-season home finale.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 7-19 and finished the home regular-season schedule with a 6-8 record (DSU will be hosting a postseason tournament on the last weekend of February). Midland dropped their record to 9-19.
With DSU leading at 15-14 with eleven minutes and 24 seconds left in the first-half, the Trojans extended their lead to 27-18 with a 12-4 scoring run in a span of four minutes.
Dakota State made three straight field goals, including two 3-pointers from Kirby Bertram and Kylie Westover, to give the Trojans a 14-point halftime cushion (39-25).
The Trojans expanded their lead to 53-30 in the first 4:19 of the second-half (14-5 run). Dakota State was 5-for-6 from the field, including 4-for-4 from the 3-point arc while Midland was 1-for-7 from the field.
DSU had their largest lead of the game at 63-37 with 11:08 remaining.
Midland could get no closer than 15 points with less a minute left in the game.
Trojan Westover shot 6-for-11 from the field (all 3-pointers field goals) and converted 4-of-4 free-throws for 22 points. She pulled down eight rebounds. Jayda Swenson added 18 points on her 6-for-8 shooting from the field off the bench. She had seven rebounds. Cassie Jacobsen scored 13 points and recorded five rebounds. Julie Munson had nine points, five assists and stole the ball five times.
Jami Thramer had a double-double of 19 points and earned 10 boards for Midland. Danielle Stephan tallied in 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench. Sammy Hislop added 12 points and five assists off the bench.
Dakota State shot 54 percent overall in the game (27-for-50) compared to the Warriors’ 40.4 percent (23-for-57). The Trojans converted 12-of-22 3-pointers (54.5 percent) in the game, while Midland was just 2-for-16 (12.5 percent).
Midland went to the free-throw line 29 times and made 20 free-throws (69 percent). The Trojans were 17-for-24 (70.8 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Warriors won the rebounding battle over DSU 36-31.
MU committed 20 turnovers in the game compared to the Trojans’ 16.
Dakota State concludes their regular-season schedule with a pair of games on the road versus the former Dakota Athletic Conference members next weekend. The Trojans start with the trip at Donald E. Young Gymnasium versus Black Hills State on Friday, Feb. 17. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)/5:30 p.m. (Mountain Time).
