Trojans conclude women's basketball regular-season schedule on road

THIS WEEK: Dakota State (7-19 overall record) women's basketball team concludes their regular-season schedule this weekend. The Trojans visit a pair of in-state rivals and former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) members. DSU visits Black Hills State (10-12) on Friday evening. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)/5:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) from the Donald E. Young Gymnasium. On Saturday, the Trojans travel to the King Center in Rapid City, S.D. to play South Dakota Mines (15-9) with the game starting time set for 5 p.m. (CT)/4 p.m. (MT).
LAST MEETING: Black Hills State had won the last 10 games in the series with the Trojans, with the most recent win at the DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 20 (last DSU win over BHSU was on Jan. 18, 2008 in Madison). The Yellow Jackets scored 31 points from DSU's turnovers for a 56-44 victory. BHSU jumped to a 13-0 opening lead and never trailed in the game. DSU could get no closer than four points on two occasions (38-34 with less than nine minutes remaining and 42-38 with 5:22 left in the game). South Dakota Mines won the last meeting with Dakota State on Jan. 21 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Lady Hardrockers scored ten straight points to open the game and gained a 40-25 halftime advantage. DSU could get no closer than six points at 68-62 with 1:14 remaining in regulation.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State split a pair of games last week. The Trojans suffered a 76-43 road defeat to nationally-ranked Morningside on Feb. 7 in Sioux City, Iowa. DSU ended their three-game losing streak on Feb. 9 as the Trojans beat Midland (Neb.) 83-68 in DSU's home regular-season finale. Dakota State drained 12 3-pointers in the game and shot a sizzling 66.7 percent from the field in the second-half for the victory. Black Hills State defeated their former DAC member Minot State 68-57 on Feb. 11. The Yellow Jackets' longest winning streak of the season was halted by the University of Sioux Falls on Feb. 12. The Cougars defeated BHSU 56-49. South Dakota Mines dropped a 63-48 home contest to USF on Feb. 11, but bounced back to defeat Minot State 63-53 on Feb. 12. Wednesday night in Spearfish, S.D.
RECORDS VERSUS FORMER DAC OPPONENTS: DSU is 1-7 against former Dakota Athletic Conference opponents this season. The Trojans defeated Mayville State 67-60 in overtime on Dec. 3 in Madison, S.D. for their win. DSU suffered losses to Jamestown and Valley City State twice, Mayville State, Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines. Black Hills State is 4-2 versus former DAC teams, while South Dakota Mines owns a 6-2 record versus the DAC.
SOUTH DAKOTA TEAMS: The Trojans are seeking for their first win against a team from South Dakota. DSU is winless in eight games this season versus in-state teams. Black Hills State records a 1-4 records against teams from South Dakota, defeating Dakota State 56-44 on Jan. 20 in Madison. South Dakota Mines have a 4-2 record against in-state teams, defeating Northern State, Black Hills State, Dakota State and Ogalala Lakota College. The Lady Hardrockers lost to University of Sioux Falls twice this season.
WESTOVER EARNS A.I.I. WEEKLY HONOR: Kylie Westover earned the weekly Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Female Athlete of the Week honor, announced on Monday morning. She drained 7-of-18 3-pointers and averaged 14.5 points per game. Westover hit 6-of-10 long-range shots in an 83-68 win over Midland (Neb.). After Saturday's game, she climbed to the sixth spot in the DSU record book for career 3-pointers made with 106. Along with her 14.5 scoring average for the week, she grabbed seven rebounds per game and averaged two assists. She shot 36.4 percent from the field. Westover ranks 42nd in the nation in total 3-point field goals with 54 and 45th in 3-point field goal made per game (2.1).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Feb. 13, Dakota State ranks 36th in the nation in total rebound margin (+2.9) and 40th in free-throw percentage (70.6 percent). The Trojans are 44th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (26.9) and 49th in 3-point field goal percentage (29.1 percent).
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Trojans in scoring with an average of 11.7 points per game. Jayda Swenson records 164 rebounds this season (6.3 rebounds per game).. Julie Munson leads the team in assists with 55 (2.4 per game) and 45 steals (2.0 per game). Swenson records seven blocked shots (0.3 per game) this season for the Trojans.
