Trojans kick off 2012 baseball season with five games on road this weekend

THIS WEEK: Dakota State kicks off their 2012 campaign this weekend in Kansas and Nebraska. The Trojans travel to Ottawa, Kan. for a four-game series with Ottawa, a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The doubleheader starts on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. at Dick Peters Memorial Sports Complex. On Monday, DSU visits Peru State (1-2 overall record and first year membership of the Heart of America Athletic Conference) in a nine-inning game at the Centennial Complex. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Peru, Neb.
LAST MEETING: The last time Dakota State and Ottawa met was on Feb. 23, 2007 in Ottawa, Kan. The Trojans scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning and held on to a 5-3 victory over the Braves. DSU and Peru State faced each other in the RussMatt Phoenix Invitational on March 6-7, 2010 in Arizona. Both teams split their two games in their last meeting with DSU winning the first game (4-1) on March 6 and Peru State winning the second game (8-4) on March 7.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Dakota State have 30 players on the current rosters with eight returning players from last year's teams. There are 22 new faces this season. The Trojans have five seniors on the team (Seth Doxey, Max Garza, Connor Hargrove, Jason Hershfield and Brandon Womack), along with eight juniors, six sophomores and 11 freshmen.
2011 REVIEW: Dakota State looks to improve from last year's 3-37 overall record. The Trojans competed in their final year membership of the Dakota Athletic Conference. DSU is currently a member of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.).
LONG ROAD SCHEDULE: DSU will be on the road for the first 28 games on the 2012 schedule. The Trojans will be in three different states—Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri—in a span of one month before returning back home in March. Dakota State will have a stretch of 12 games home stand at the Flynn Field from March 22 to April 1. The Trojans play their final doubleheader of the season at home on April 24 versus Dordt (Iowa). DSU will play a total of eight Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I..) conference games this year (four each with former Dakota Athletic Conference foes Jamestown and Mayville State).
ROMAN LISTED FOR PLAYERS TO WATCH: A Trojan baseball athlete has been listed in the 'NAIA Baseball Players to Watch List' in the Jan. 6, 2012 edition of Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Anyelo Roman—6'3", 205 lbs.—was one of the 12 national players listed in the multi-position category for this spring. Roman is a junior transfer from Northern Essex Community College (Mass.) where he batted .321 and recorded 15 doubles before the Knights were eliminated in regional play by Manchester Community College. Roman had an overall pitching record of 4-4 and an ERA of 4.83 with 51 strikeouts and 13 walks in 50 innings.
A.I.I. BASEBALL INDEPENDENT TOURNAMENT: The A.I.I. Baseball Independent Tournament will be hosted by Cal State-San Marcos on May 2-5. Besides host-team Cal State-San Marcos, five other teams will qualify to the independent tournament. The winner and runner-up of the independent tournament each will receive an automatic bid to the national tournament. Cal State-San Marcos is the defending A.I.I. Baseball champions where they defeated Houston-Victory (Texas) 10-3 in the championship game. The NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Tournament is held on May 10-14 on nine different campus sites (selected by the NAIA). The Avista-NAIA World Series will be held in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25 to June 1.
