Yellow Jackets sweep season series with DSU women’s basketball

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Black Hills State opened the game with a 12-0 run and never trailed in the game to defeat Dakota State 51-39 in a battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference women's basketball foes at Donald E. Young Gymnasium Friday night. The Yellow Jackets swept the season series with the Trojans.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 7-20. Black Hills State, a transitional member of NCAA Division II, moved to .500 with a 12-12 record and recorded their final home win of the season. BHSU won their last 11 meetings in the series with the Trojans.
The Yellow Jackets scored 12 straight points in the first five minutes and 13 seconds of the game. DSU ended their scoring drought with Katy Pillar's jump shot with 14:07 left in the first-half.
BHSU extended their lead to 21-7 with less than six minutes remaining before halftime.
Dakota State limited the Yellow Jackets to no field goals in the final 5:58 of the first-half as the Trojans trimmed their deficit to 21-16 at halftime (9-0 run to close the first-half).
Black Hills State used another strong opening run in the second-half. The Yellow Jackets used an 8-2 run to extend their lead back in double digits at 29-18 with 16:43 remaining.
DSU was able to get no closer than eight points at 44-36 with 2:36 left in regulation.
Kylie Westover scored 11 points for the Trojans. She had five rebounds. Katy Pillar added seven points and pulled down eight rebounds. Julie Munson had seven points, dished out three assists and recorded three steals. Sharee Galbraith scored six points and earned six boards off the bench. Jayda Swenson had six rebounds.
Bayley Chevron had 11 points for BHSU. She was 5-for-10 from the field. Dakota Barrie added nine points and grabbed five rebounds. Kristi Ryan scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds. Jordan Kent recorded three blocked shots and three steals.
Black Hills State shot 34.5 percent (19-for-55) from the field compared to the Trojans' 31.2 percent (15-for-48).
DSU won the rebounding battle over the Yellow Jackets 38-35.
The Trojans committed 25 turnovers in the game compared to BHSU 16.
Dakota State concludes their regular-season schedule Saturday afternoon as they visit another former DAC foe and in-state rival South Dakota Mines. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. (Central Time)/3 p.m. (Mountain Time) at the King Center in Rapid City, S.D.
