Trojan men’s basketball records 16th win for the first time since 1992

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Dakota State shot 51.9 percent in the first-half and held off a furious late rally from South Dakota Mines Saturday evening at King Center. The Trojans held on to a 79-74 victory and completed a season series sweep with the Hardrockers for the first time since 2004-05 season.
Dakota State finished their regular-season overall record of 16-12. It was the first time since 1992 that DSU had recorded 16 wins (the year when the Trojans made a run to the NAIA National Tournament 'Final Four' with a 19-16 overall record). South Dakota Mines, a transitional member of NCAA Division II, dropped their record to 15-12.
DSU was 14-for-27 from the field in the first-half to give them a 38-24 halftime lead (ended with a 12-2 run). The Hardrockers were 7-for-24 (29.2 percent).
The Trojans were able to build their lead to 17 points in the second-half before SDM mounted a furious late rally.
South Dakota Mines was able to get no closer than two points (70-68) with two minutes and eight seconds left to go.
The Hardrockers outscored the Trojans 50-41 in the second-half. SDM shot 69 percent from the field (20-for-29) compared to the Trojans' 58.3 percent (14-for-24).
Spencer Adams recorded a season-high of 27 points. He was 10-for-19 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line. Adams had a game-high nine rebounds. Jesse Bean added 15 points on his 4-for-6 shooting from the field and converted all five free-throws. Cameron Krump tallied in 12 points off the bench. Luke Lamb had 10 points.
Michael Dietz had 20 points and five rebounds for the Hardrockers. He was 10-for-15 from the field. Nathan Jacobsen added 14 points. Tanner Friesen had 13 points. Lance Kilburn scored 11 points off the bench.
Dakota State shot 54.9 percent overall from the field (28-for-51) compared to the Hardrockers' 50.9 percent (27-for-53).
DSU was 16-for-22 (72.7 percent) from the free-throw line. SDM struggled from the free-throw line, converting 12 of 20 free-throws.
The Trojans had a 33-20 rebounding advantage over the Hardrockers.
Dakota State heads into the postseason play next weekend. DSU hosts the five-team State Farm Association of Independent Institutions tournament at the DSU Fieldhouse. Pairings and games times will be announced on Sunday afternoon. The first-round game will kick off at 8 p.m. on Friday night.
