Dakota State baseball wins first game, loses second game with Braves

OTTAWA, Kan. – Dakota State recorded their second win of the season Sunday afternoon over Ottawa (Kan.) 6-1 at Dick Peters Memorial Sports Complex, but dropped an 11-6 decision in the second game of the doubleheader. The Trojans and Braves gained a four-game series split.
DSU and Ottawa's overall record currently stands at 2-2.
Game 1 – Dakota State 6, Ottawa (Kan.) 1 - BOX SCORE
Dakota State opened the first game with three runs scored in the top of the third inning. Anyelo Roman hit an RBI single to score Kyle Holland for the first run of the game. The Trojans added a run scored from Anyelo Roman caused by OU's defensive error. Ryan Bouricer hit an RBI ground out to score Jason Hershfield to give DSU a 3-0 lead.
After Spenser Augustine's single to open the bottom fourth inning for Ottawa, Dustin Balmer hit an RBI triple to score Augustine to trim their deficit to 3-1.
DSU hit two solo home runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-1. Hershfield opened the inning with a home run on a 0-1 count. Ryan Bouricer added another homer with one-out first pitch.
Holland recorded an RBI single to score Chaz Palmer in the top of the seventh inning to make it 6-1 in favor of the Trojans.
Bourcier had a home run and two RBIs for the Trojans. Hershfield added a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Rays Roman, Holland and Anyelo Roman each had a single.
Balmer had a triple and an RBI for Ottawa. Jeff Montenegro, Kyle Pener and Augustine each had a hit.
The Braves committed four errors in the game while DSU had one error.
Hershfield pitched a complete game victory for DSU. He limited the Braves to one run and four hits. He struck out five batters.
Jake Kissner took the loss as he pitched seven innings. He allowed six runs – four unearned – on five hits. He recorded five strikeouts.
Game 2 – Ottawa (Kan.) 11, Dakota State 6 - BOX SCORE
Ottawa produced five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie game into an 11-6 victory.
The Braves scored its first run of the game in the bottom second frame. Alejandro Villegas hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Kaylem Quinn to give OU a 1-0 lead.
Dakota State answered back in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. Corey Pasichnyk opened the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Seth Doxey reached first base by walk and advanced Pasichnyk to second. Rays Roman hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Pasichnyk for DSU's first run of the game.
OU put together a 2-run bottom third inning by Pener's RBI single and Balmer's RBI sacrifice fly to give the Braves a 3-1 lead.
DSU took the lead for the first time in the second game by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth frame. Max Garza scored caused by OU's defensive error. Bourcier added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Ryan Steffensen. Pasichnyk hit a solo home run on a 0-1 count and two outs give DSU a 4-3 lead.
Augustine hit a 3-RBI double with two outs in the bottom fourth frame as Ottawa regain their lead to 6-4.
Garza hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning on a 1-2 count with two outs as DSU trimmed their deficit to 6-5.
The Trojans tied the game at 6-6 in the top sixth inning by Holland's RBI single to score Palmer.
OU opened the bottom sixth inning with four straight singles. The Braves produced five runs and five hits to break a 6-6 tie into an 11-6 lead.
Dakota State was unable to answer back in the final inning. The Trojans left one runner on base when the game ended.
Garza and Pasichnyk each had a home run, two runs scored and an RBI for DSU. Holland had a single and an RBI. Steffensen recorded a single.
Augustine went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and recorded three RBIs for the Braves. Montenegro had two hits and three runs scored. Quinn had a double, a single and two RBIs.
OU outhit the Trojans 12-4 in the game.
Kyle Bradbury started on the mound for DSU. He pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Mike Chartier worked for 1 1/3 innings in relief and gave up two runs on two hits. Seth Rockafellow took the loss as he started the bottom of the sixth inning. He allowed five runs – one unearned – on five hits. Brandon Womack tossed one shutout inning in relief.
Tyler Wilson pitched the first four innings for the Braves. He gave up four hits – two unearned – on one hit. He recorded four strikeouts. Augustine worked one inning in relief and allowed one run on two hits. Bret Stratton pitched 2/3 innings and gave up one unearned run on one hit. Balmer recorded the victory as he pitched 1/3 innings. Montenegro tossed a shutout seventh inning to seal the victory.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column on Monday. The Trojans play a nine-inning game with Peru State in Sabetha, Kan. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
