Trojans continue action on the road in Kansas for five baseball games this weekend

THIS WEEK: Dakota State's baseball team (2-2 overall record) continues their stretch of 28 games on the road with five games this weekend. The Trojans play a single nine-inning game with Saint Mary (Kan.) (3-2) on Friday. First pitch from the USM Baseball Field is set for 3 p.m. in Leavenworth, Kan. DSU will play a four-game series with Baker (Kan.) (1-3) this weekend. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday at the Sauder Baseball Field.
TROJANS SPLIT SEASON OPENING SERIES: Dakota State split a four-game series with Ottawa (Kan.) in Trojans' baseball season opening series. On Feb. 18, The Trojans ended their 14-game losing streak with a season-opening 4-0 win over the Braves. Anyelo Roman threw a complete game in the victory and limited the Braves to five hits. Ottawa won the second game by the score of 1-0, despite a complete game by DSU's Seth Doxey which he allowed an unearned run and two hits with six strikeouts. The Trojans bounced back in the winning column in the first game 6-1 on Feb. 19 where DSU hit two solo home runs from Jason Hershfield and Ryan Bouricer. Ottawa won the final game of the series 11-6, recording five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Kyle Braun leads the Trojans with three hits and a batting average of .375. Ryan Bouricer records three RBIs this season. Rays Romans records two stolen bases in four games. Anyelo Romans, Seth Doxey and Brandon Womack each have an ERA of 0.00. Doxey leads the team in strikeouts per game (9 innings) with 9.0 (six total strikeouts).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Thursday, Dakota State ranks fifth in the nation in home runs per game (1.0). The Trojans are 15th in the nation in fielding percentage (.976) and 28th in assists per game (10.8).
A.I.I. BASEBALL INDEPENDENT TOURNAMENT: The A.I.I. Baseball Independent Tournament will be hosted by Cal State-San Marcos on May 2-5. Besides host-team Cal State-San Marcos, five other teams will qualify to the independent tournament. The winner and runner-up of the independent tournament each will receive an automatic bid to the national tournament. Cal State-San Marcos is the defending A.I.I. Baseball champions where they defeated Houston-Victory (Texas) 10-3 in the championship game. The NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Tournament is held on May 10-14 on nine different campus sites (selected by the NAIA). The Avista-NAIA World Series will be held in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25 to June 1.

UP NEXT: Dakota State baseball will play a 15-game schedule during the annual spring break in Missouri and Kansas. The Trojans kick off the 15-game stretch with a four-game series with Park (Mo.) on March 3 and 4 in Parkville, Mo.
