Dakota State splits baseball doubleheader with Pirates

PARKVILLE, Mo. – The Dakota State University baseball team recorded their third straight win in the first game of the doubleheader 11-6 with Park (Mo.) Sunday afternoon at Comfort Field. The Pirates took the final game of the four-game series 16-0 as the Trojans earned a 3-1 series win over Park.
DSU's overall record currently stands at 7-6. Park is 7-3.
Game 1 – Dakota State 11, Park (Mo.) 6 - BOX SCORE
Anyelo Roman hit a 2-run home run in the opening inning to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
Park answered back with four runs in the bottom of the first frame to overtake the lead from DSU, 4-2. Cody Cobb and Kyle Clifton each recorded an RBI double in the inning.
In the top of the second inning, Dakota State produced three runs to regain their lead at 5-4. Anyelo Roman hit an RBI double. Evan Tufvesson (courtesy runner for Max Garza) scored by a wild pitch by Park to tie the game at 4-4. Ryan Bouricer added an RBI single to score Kyle Holland (pinch runner for Anyelo Roman).
The Pirates tied the game at 5-5 by Trojans' defensive error in the bottom of the second inning.
With bases loaded and no outs for DSU in the top of the third inning, Chaz Palmer hit an RBI single (to score Jason Hershfield) to gain a 6-5 lead. Rays Roman added a 2-RBI double to score Connor Hargrove and Kyle Braun to give the Trojans an 8-5 lead.
Lance Kays hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to trim their deficit to 8-6.
Hershfield opened the top of the sixth inning with a double for DSU. He stole the base to third base with one out. Hershfield scored by a wild pitch by the Pirates as the Trojans extended their lead to 9-6.
DSU added two runs in the top of the seventh frame by Hershfield's 2-RBI double (scored Corey Pasichnyk and Bourcier.
Anyelo Roman went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and recorded three RBIs for the Trojans. Hershfield added two doubles, a single and two RBIs. Rays Roman had a double. Garza, Pasichnyk, Braun, Hargrove and Palmer each had a single.
Cobb, Clifton and Kays each had a double for the Pirates. Chris Booth went 3-for-3 behind the plate. Kirk Pruitt had two hits.
Dakota State recorded four stolen bases in the game – one each by Bouricer, Hershfield, Hargrove and Palmer.
The Trojans left 12 runners on bases. Park had seven runners left on base.
Anyelo Roman recorded his second victory for the Trojans. He tossed 4 1/3 innings and gave up six runs (one unearned) on 11 hits. Hershfield notched his second straight save by pitching the final 2 2/3 innings in relief. He limited the Pirates to one hit.
Colin Letcher started on the pitching mound for Park. He allowed five runs on six hits. Matt Prybyszczuk (0-1) took the loss. He worked in 3 1/3 innings and gave up four runs (one unearned) on six hits. He gave up five walks. Chad Gordon pitched one inning in relief and allowed two runs and one hit. Alex Thornton threw the final out of the top of the seventh inning.
Game 2 – Park (Mo.) 16, Dakota State 0 - BOX SCORE
The Trojans were shut down by the Pirates in the final game of the four-game series.
Park scored 16 combined runs (seven runs in the bottom of the third inning) in the first four innings for the victory.
Rays Roman, Garza and Bourcier each had a single for DSU.
Clifton had two doubles and six RBIs for the Pirates. Booth and Kays each had three hits.
Brandon Womack (0-2) recorded the loss for the Trojans. He pitched the first two innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Drew Sweeter worked 2/3 innings in relief. He gave up seven runs on three hits. Seth Rockafellow pitched the final 3 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits.
Park's Derek Gordon (3-0) worked the first five innings for the victory. He allowed three hits. Thorenzo Acuna and Josh Garcia each pitched one shutout inning in relief.
The Pirates outhit the Trojans 16-3 in the game.
Dakota State continues their spring break road trip with a doubleheader on Monday. The Trojans travel to the Dixon Stadium in Olathe, Kan. to visit MidAmerican Nazarene. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
