Pioneers sweep Trojans in baseball doubleheader action

Anyelo RomanOLATHE, Kan. – MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) baseball team scored in double digits in both games Monday afternoon to sweep Dakota State at Dixon Stadium.  The Trojans suffered their third straight defeat.

DSU dropped their overall record to 7-8.  MidAmerican Nazarene, a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference that swept NAIA's No. 1 Oklahoma City earlier this season, improved their record to 10-5.

Game 1 – MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) 15, Dakota State 6 - BOX SCORE

Max GarzaThe Pioneers produced four runs in the bottom of the first inning to give MNU a 4-0 early lead.

Dakota State scored twice in the top of the second frame.  Chaz Palmer hit a 2-RBI single with two outs to trim Pioneers' lead to 4-2.

MidAmerican Nazarene added two runs in the bottom second inning to extend their lead to 6-2.

Ryan SteffensenDSU's Anyelo Roman hit a solo home run (his fourth home run this season) in the top of the third inning with one out.  Jason Hershfield added an RBI double to score Ryan Bourcier.  Ryan Steffensen recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hersfield as the Trojans contributed three runs in the inning and reduced their deficit to one run (6-5).

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pioneers put another four-run inning to expand their lead to 10-5.

Palmer scored in the top of the fourth inning by Roman's RBI ground out (MNU 10-6).

The Pioneers scored five times in the bottom fifth inning to seal the victory.

Roman went 2-for-4 behind the plate with a home run and two RBIs for the Trojans.  Hershfield added a double.  Max Garza, Bourcier, Steffensen and Palmer each had a single.

Derek Glenn had three hits, three runs and two RBIs for MidAmerica Nazarene.  Kyle Segraves, Tim Barraza, Ben Alison and Alex Murrieta each added two hits.  Barraza and Murrieta each had three RBIs.

The Pioneers outhit the Trojans 14-7 in the game.

Kyle Bradbury (0-2) recorded the loss for DSU.  He allowed 10 runs (three unearned) on 10 hits.  Beau Behrend worked 2 1/3 innings in relief.  He gave up five runs on four hits.  J.D. Farley threw 1 1/3 shutout inning in relief.

Kevin Liddle notched his first victory this season for the Pioneers.  He tossed a complete game and allowed six runs (three unearned) on seven hits.  He recorded seven strikeouts.

Game 2 – MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) 12, Dakota State 7 - BOX SCORE

Garza hit an RBI single to score Roman to score the first run of the game for DSU in the top of the first inning.

The Pioneers exploded for five runs in the bottom first frame to regain a 5-1 lead.

MNU added a run in the second inning by Josh Greer's RBI single to extend their lead to 6-1.

The Trojans answered back in the top of the third inning with six runs scored.  Steffensen hit a 2-RBI double to score Connor Hargrove and Plamer.  Garza added an RBI single to score Steffensen.  Kyle Braun hit an RBI double to score Roman and Kellon Romberger added an RBI single to score Evan Tufvesson (courtesy runner for Garza).  Braun scored by a wild pitch from the Pioneers to give DSU a 7-6 lead.

MidAmerica Nazarene regained their lead back in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The Pioneers scored four times for a 10-7 lead.

The Pioneers added two runs in the fifth inning to earn the victory.

Garza had two hits and two RBIs for the Trojans.  Steffensen added a double, two RBIs and a run scored.  Roman, Hershfield, Braun and Romberger each had a hit.

Segraves went perfect behind the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored for MNU.  Murrieta added two hits and four RBIs.  Dillon Moeller had two hits.

Andy Lee started on the mount for DSU.  He pitched the first inning and allowed five runs (one unearned) on four hits.  Drew Sweeter worked the second inning and gave up one run on two hits.  Seth Rockafellow (0-2) recorded the loss as he worked two innings in relief.  He gave up four runs on three hits.  Corey Pasichnyke worked the fifth inning and gave up two runs on two hits.  Garza pitched a shutout sixth inning as he struck out three MNU batters.

Kanon Hoover was the starting pitcher for the Pioneers.  He tossed the first two innings and allowed six runs on four hits.  Tim Barraza (1-0) recorded the victory as he worked five innings and limited the Trojans to one run on three hits.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column on Tuesday evening.  The Trojans play a single nine-inning game versus Central Christian College in McPherson, Kan.  First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Grant Complex.
