Trojans end Bethany’s (Kan.) baseball winning streak in first game 3-2, lose second game 7-5

LINDSBORG, Kan. – Dakota State baseball team ended Bethany's (Kan.) eight-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field. The Swedes gained a 7-5 win in the second game to earn a split with the Trojans.
Dakota State is 9-12 overall record after Saturday's games. Bethany, a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, is 13-5.
Game 1 – Dakota State 3, Bethany (Kan.) 2 - BOX SCORE
DSU's Jason Hershfield hit a solo home run (his third home run of the season) with a full count to open a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Rays Roman hit a double with one out in the top third frame. He swiped to third base. Ryan Steffensen hit an RBI single to score Rays Roman to extend Trojans' lead to 2-0.
In the bottom third inning, Nicholas Ceccarelli hit an RBI single to score Blake Froome as Bethany trimmed DSU's lead to 2-1.
BC's Froome recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Seth Doxey hit an RBI single with two outs to score Anyelo Roman in the top of the sixth inning to gain a 3-2 lead for DSU.
The Trojans sealed the victory by as the Swedes went three-and-out in the final inning.
Rays Roman had a double and a single for Dakota State. Anyelo Roman added two singles. Hershfield had a home run. Steffensen, Doxey and Kyle Holland each added a single.
Froome, Will Gibson and Matt Gabrielson each had two singles for Bethany. Roemon Fields, Jose Sermo and Ceccarelli each recorded a single.
Rays Roman, Anyelo Roman, Holland and Steffensen each swiped one base for the Trojans.
Doxey (2-2) tossed a complete game victory for DSU. He allowed two runs (one unearned) on nine hits. He struck out four Swede batters.
Morgan Heiman started on the mound for Bethany. He worked the first four innings and gave up two runs on four hits. He recorded four strikeouts. Ryan Gunther (1-2) recorded the loss. He allowed one unearned run on four hits.
Game 2 – Bethany (Kan.) 7, Dakota State 5 - BOX SCORE
Dakota State scored its first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Hershfield hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Steffensen to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Bethany tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning caused by DSU's defensive error.
Chaz Palmer hit a 2-RBI single to score Doxey and Max Garza in the top of the second inning to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead. Rays Roman hit an RBI double to score Palmer to extend DSU's lead to 4-1.
The Swedes answered back with three runs scored in the bottom second frame. Fields and Nick Lucchesi each hit an RBI single. Sermo added an RBI triple to score Eric Brown (courtesy runner for Lucchesi) to tie the game at 4-4.
Dakota State regained their lead for the third time in the game in the top fourth inning. A wild pitch allowed Kyle Braun to score and give the Trojans a 5-4 lead.
Fields tripled with one out for Bethany in the bottom fourth inning. Jose Rodriguez hit an RBI single to score Fields to tie the game at 5-5, third time in the game that the Swedes tied the game.
Lucchesi recorded 2-RBI single in the bottom sixth inning to give Bethany their first lead of the game at 7-5.
DSU was unable to answer back in the final inning as the Trojans left one runner on base.
Rays Roman, Steffensen and Anyelo Roman each had a double for Dakota State. Palmer had a single and two RBIs. Garza recorded a single.
Fields had a triple and two singles for the Swedes. Lucchesi added three singles and two RBIs. Rodriguez and Sermo each had a hit and an RBI.
Hershfield (2-2) recorded the loss for the Trojans. He pitched six innings and allowed seven runs (two unearned) on nine hits. He struck out eight Bethany's batters.
Boston Draper worked the first five innings for Bethany. He gave up five runs (three unearned) on four hits. Montana Prim (5-0) recorded the win as he tossed two shutout innings in relief. He limited the Trojans to one hit.
Dakota State and Bethany conclude their four-game series Sunday with a doubleheader. First game is set for 12 noon at the Anderson Field in Lindsborg, Kan.
