Dakota State earns four-game series baseball split at Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. – Dakota State recorded a 3-1 first game victory of the four-game baseball series with Hastings on Saturday at Duncan Field. The Broncos won the second game 5-1 on Saturday and 4-2 first game win on Sunday. The Trojans rallied back for a 3-1 victory in the final game of the series to gain a split with Hastings.
Dakota State completed their first 25-game road schedule with an overall record of 11-14. The Broncos are 7-15 overall record.
Game 1 – Dakota State 3, Hastings 1 - BOX SCORE
Mike Tomlin hit an RBI single in the bottom third frame to give Hastings a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh inning to gain their first lead of the game. Rays Roman hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Kyle Holland to tie the game at 1-1. Anyelo Roman added an RBI single to score Chaz Palmer for a 2-1 DSU lead. Ryan Bourcier hit an RBI single to score Max Garza to extend Trojans' lead to 3-1.
The Broncos left three runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Trojans secured the victory.
Garza and Ryan Steffensen each had three singles for Dakota State. Steffensen swiped two bases. Anyelo Roman added two singles and an RBI. Rays Roman, Bourcier, Jason Hershfield and Palmer each had a hit.
Tomlin went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single at the plate for Hastings. Decker Brown, Mack Land, John Rivera, Jake Steese, Colton Williams and Brent Hermanussen each had a hit.
The Broncos left 12 runners on base. DSU had seven runners left on base.
Seth Doxey started the game for the Trojans. He worked the first five innings and gave up one run on seven hits. Brandon Womack (3-2) notched the win by pitching the sixth inning and allowed one hit. Jason Hershfield recorded his third save of the season as he worked the final inning and limited the Broncos to one hit.
Game 2 – Hastings 5, Dakota State 1 - BOX SCORE
The Broncos exploded for five runs in the opening inning to give Hastings a 5-0 lead.
DSU got its first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Steffensen recorded an RBI fielder's choice to score Anyelo Roman. The Trojans trimmed Hastings' lead to 5-1.
Anyelo Roman had two hits for the Trojans. Rays Roman added a double. Bouricer, Hershfield and Steffensen each had a single.
Ben Reimer recorded two RBIs for the Broncos. Jake Steese, John LaMaster, Gabe Salas and Connor Thomas each had a hit.
DSU had nine runners left on bases. Hastings left five runners on base.
Kyle Bradbury (0-3) took the loss for the Trojans. He allowed five runs (two unearned) on three hits. Josh Caven pitched three shutout innings in relief. J.D. Farley tossed two shutout innings. Seth Rockafellow worked the bottom sixth inning and allowed one hit.
Addison Ives (2-2) recorded the victory for Hastings. He pitched five innings and gave up one run on five hits. Patrick Williamson worked the final two innings in relief. He allowed one hit.
Game 3 – Hastings 4, Dakota State 2 - BOX SCORE
The Broncos produced two runs in the bottom first inning to gain a 2-0 early lead.
Anyelo Roman hit an RBI single to score Rays Roman in the top third frame as DSU cut their deficit to 2-1.
Dakota State tied the game at 2-2 when Anyelo Roman hit an RBI single to score Palmer.
Rivera and Drew Clark each recorded an RBI single in the bottom fifth inning to regain their lead at 4-2.
The Trojans were unable to rally back in the final two innings of the game as HC secured the win.
Anyelo Roman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate for DSU. Rays Roman recorded two stolen bases. Steffensen and Palmer each added a single.
Tomlin and Rivera each had two singles for the Broncos. Land, Clark and Tanner Santarelli each added a single.
Anyelo Roman (2-2) recorded the loss for DSU. He tossed six innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on seven hits.
LaMaster (2-2) recorded the victory for Hastings. He gave up two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Williamson worked 2/3 innings in relief. Land got his second save of the season as he tossed a shutout seventh inning.
Game 4 – Dakota State 3, Hastings 1 - BOX SCORE
Tomlin hit an RBI single to give Hastings its first lead of the game at 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought with three runs (all with two outs) in the top of the fourth inning. Connor Hargrove hit an RBI single to score Bourcier and Garza added a run caused by HC's defensive error. Kyle Braun added an RBI single to score Hargrove to secure a victory for DSU.
Rays Roman, Garza, Hargrove, Braun and Palmer each had a single for the Trojans.
Daniel Nealon, Tomlin, Rivera and Steese each had a hit for Hastings.
Hershfield (3-2) tossed a complete game victory for DSU. He allowed one run on four hits. Hershfield recorded eight strikeouts.
Colton Williams remained winless and dropped his record to 0-4 for the Broncos. He pitched a complete game and gave up three unearned runs on five hits. Williams struck out nine Trojans' batters.
Dakota State returns home for the first time on Thursday. The Trojans welcome their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in DSU's home opener doubleheader at Flynn Field. The first game is set for 2 p.m.
